CONTRACT LET
FOR BEALEY BRIDGE (Per Press Association, Copyright). CHRISTCHURCH, June 26. The Public Works Department Tenders Board has let the contract for. a new concrete bridge over the Waimakariri River at the Bealey to W. Clark and Sous, 0 f Kaiapoi. The tendered price was £SOb«J. Already the approaches for the iie’ vv bridge at the Bealey are being constructed, and it should not be long after the end of the month before the actual work on the bridge is started. The structure will have 20 spans each 44 feet long, with a deck 10 feet wide, except at the passing place in the middle. There it will gradually widen out to a width of 10 feet. Piers of reinforced concrete piles will be used. They will be three-pile piers, with the exception of two special 'piers of four piles where 1 joints occur and five-pile piers below the span providing the passing place. The approaches on the west side of the bridge have been completed, and men are now working on the other side. The work also includes a certain amount of embankment constructed for the protection of the approaches from floods. It is expected that the construction of the bridge will* be completed in nine months from the date the work starts. '
ROAD ROUTE CHRISTCHURCH, June 26, The Main Highways Board has decided to adhere to its original proposal for the deviation of the Main South highway between Rangitata and Winchester, and has given a considered opinion against the suggestion of the Geraldine Business Men’s Association that the deviation should he made through Geraldine.
