In connection with the next session of .Parliament, Ministers and theii departmental heads have alieadv gi\<n <i lot of attention to the preparation ot Estimates, and these should be ready lor final perusal hy the Minister ot Finance, the IU. Hon. J. G- Coates, when lie returns troni London. Again this year main interest wiJ! centre on the delemv vote. Although the details of the proposed expeiuiitme have not yet been completed, there are indications that the vote will he in excess of that of last year. The Govern intuit lias various plans in view lor strengthening the defences of the Dominion, and these cannot be earned out without increased expenditure. Mr Coates intimated before be left New Zealand that during his visit to England he would give attention to the preparation of bis Budget, so that it would be ready for early presentation during the session. Preliminary figures showing the financial position of the country were in Mr Coates’ possession, and he stated prior to leaving New Zealand that lie expected to have his financial proposals mapped out before he reurned.
