SOME REMITS CARRIED

DANNEVIRKE, June 7
Trig annual meeting of southern Ha"kea Bay Farmers Union passed, by 16 votes to I’2, a resolution in favour of lifting the restrictions upon the importation of liv’o stock from Britain, subject to strict quarantine conditions being imposed. The following remit was carried : That the Dominion executive, be asked to watch carefully the amalgamations taking place in newspapers of the world, as ociiig a suggested menace to agriculture, the executive be asked to examine* the jjossibilities of compulsory unionism of farmers .aiming at (1) a ipress united by commercial and mercantile influences, (2) a stringent budgetary system °f educating farmers to the' urgent necessity of putting farming on tbe basis of business integrity, (3) promotion of compulsory co-operation, after a few years warning to commercial trusts.
The mover, S. Stratford, referred to what was happening in Christchurch, regarding the newspaper merger and said if all the smaller journals were going out of action, and all he under one head, they would be a direct menace to agriculture in this country and going to be pretty severe. The meeting favoured the establishment of a state lottery, from which 20 per cent of the gross proceeds should be set aside from tre ;und toslvould be set aside from the fund tcthe Napier earthquake..
