DEAD WHALE
ON BEACH NEAR NEW PLYMOUTH NEW PLYMOUTH, May 31. Scarred as though a veteran of many a marine battle, and with a fresh deep circular puncture in the side, a dead bottle-nose whale was round on the beach at Oakura, nine miles south of New Plymouth this morning. The would is believed to have been caused by a swordfish, and was probably the cause of death. The whale is U6fc. in length and over 12ft. in girth. The hide is a glossy black, verging to white on the under sidei. A large triangular tooth projects from the gum at each corner of the lower jaw.
