TO-DAY’S CHARGES HEARD.

in the Hokitika Magistrate's Court this morning the following cases were dealt- with • . Licensing Act. Joseph' Owen Byrne,'licensee of the Wntaroa Hotel, was charged with opening his .premises,. with aiding anti abetting, and with silling \liquor, the alleged offences being committed after hours. . •

A man was charged with being found on the premises. ■ The latter, defendant wa s convicted and fined 15/-- >

Mr J. W. Hannan pleaded guilty to the opening and aiding and abetting charges, the charge of .selling being withdrawn.

Sergt. King said Constable Best visited the hotel where the defendant was found, 'having been supplied by the licensee. There were several empty, glasses about. The licensee, who did not give a veyy p satisfactory explanation, was convicted/ for selling after, hours on March 15.

Counsel 'said the glasses had been, used by boarders, of whom there were several. The man found on the premises was the only non-boarder. The Bench said it appeared there had been considerable after-hour trading. If . defendant-, came before him again he would consider endorsing the license. Defendant was convicted ana fined £5/ and costs £2/16/-. Charged with being found on the premises of the Empire Hotel, Kanieri } a man was convicted and finea 15/- and costs 10/-.
