BOBBY VEAL
° T TUATION IN THE MARKET
HAMILTON, February 7
• An explanation of the effect of the hobby veal embargo upon the market was made to-day by Mr W. A. Phillips managing director of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig-marketing Association. This subject bad come into prominence again, said Mr Phillips, as a result of the Meat Board’s decision to release '.for shipment l'a.st season’s stocks of this productTaking his own. company’s experience as a fair criterion tor the North Island, Mr Phillips estimated that ttie more, if any, than 25 per cent of the meat from the total calves slaughtered at freezing works had been saved for export, and that consequently there was little danger of toe .shipment of the 'comparatively small stored stocks having any adverse effect on the next season’s market. On the contrary, however, since it was obvious from a review of the chain of events that the Meat Board’s objective, which at the time bad reason to conmiend it, band now failed in its purpose, the real danger seemed to lie in the possibilities of permanently sing at least part of this valuable trade though shortage of stocks to potential substitutes. Australia would not be slow to take advange of the position .and would probahlv now be a competitor for a share of this limited market.
