MEETING HELD LAST EVENING.e

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, when there were present the Mayor, (Mr G. A. Perry), Os. A.

1 hompuon, j. King, A. C. Amstrong, T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcoelc, and J. Cuttence. Apologies were received from ors. E. Teiehelmann, I). P. Stuart, and G. Heinz.

The financial statement showed receipts since last meeting totalled £439 IBs 7d, and expenditure £B2O 3s lOd. There was a debit of £865 3s lOd. the district fund account Accounts amounting to £745 8s 8d were passed for payment.

Mr F. W. Fa in, and others wrote asking that that portion of Revcll St. from the Duenain Hotel to Park St. be tar-sealed <vhe n the lower portion of Re veil 3t. is being re-sealed.— Agreed uo. Mr A . R. Elcock made application to.- consent to the sub-division of See. 262 Weld St.,—Approved. N. 7L Refrigerating Company intimated that 31 sheep and one lamb were delivered into Hokitika, during J aiiuary.—Received. The Sanitary Inspector wrote asking that the requisition on See. 36 (b) of the Helath Act be served on the owner of premises occupied by C. A. Jolly in respect of drainage.—Agreed to.

No. 12 District Highways Council wrote asking (1) for tentative estimates of expenditure on main, highway for 1935-36. and intimating a. total expenditure of £133 should cover cost of maintenance of that section of the highway within the borough. It further advised that it would lie satisfactory if the balance of the money for tar-sealing is paid immediately after March 31; and also that, in future, any road to be recommended for declaration as a main highway, must i.rst be completely legalised as a public road.-—Received. The State Fire and Accident Insurance Office advised that, in the event of the borough being in the market for a loan, the Sta-to Fire Office might have funds available for investment. Received.

The Kanieri Hokitika. (Sawmills made application for suitable access to a section adjoining the Botanical Reserve. The application was granted. The meeting derided to proceed with the construction, of the drain in Revell Street, and that a survev be obtained of the part proposed to done, from "Weld to Stafford Street.

The following stock was slaughtered at the Municipal Abattoirs during January:—Claws, 37; bullocks, 56: heifers, 24; pigs, 4; sheep 212; lambs, 206; calves, 9. Receipts amounted to £76 12s 6d, as against £64 9s 6d for the same period last year. The Mayor stated that a letter had been sent to Mr H. J. Radford prior to his departure for the United States thanking him for his services to the town andjfalso those of Kanieri Electric while appreciation was expressed Mr.s Radford for her work in connection with the Junior Librsrv. The Council decided to invite H'olnms. in. Wellington enrpneer, to visit Hokitika and inspect the borough water system.

The Town Clerk submitted an estimate for the replacement of pipes in ooundv'tion .with the bormioL water reticulation. It was decided tn procure 200 feet of concrete-lined pipes.

Foreman’s Report.

The foreman reported the following work carried out during the 'month :—• The remaining five chains of concrete lined pipes were laid in Fitzherbert Street clear of the tar-sealing and three water connections put in, finishing at the fir e plug outside Mr Sanders’ residence. Old pipes were dug out over four chains. Some were in fair condition and could he used again but most of them wore beyond service again. Four new 8 inch pipes were laid across Fitzherbert Street at Hampden Street junction and casting and valves removed clear of the tar-sealing. A double row of concrete pipes, numbering 46, were laid in Livingston Street drain across Stafford Street, the wooden covering- being completely gone. A break in the drain on Gibson’s Quay was repaired, also a break in the Staf ford Street drain. A sand trap was put in on the east side of Fitzherbert

Asphalt was made, and pot holes in Revcll Street and footpath filled. A new pipe was put in at the main in Brittan Street between Stafford and Hampden Streets and a water srvice was put in to Mr Gooch's residence in (Park Street. A new hand valve was put in at th e corner oi Park and Hall Streets, and a concrete cover was put over the valv e at the corner of Park and Fitzherbert Streets. The water service at th e Railway was renewed, and water service in (Park Street repaired. Several fire plugs along the highways, which is now being tarsealed, were raised, and leaks repaired in various parts of the town, and along the pipe line. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was lft 2in.
