EARTH TREMORS

DUNEDIN, December 9.

Two distinct earthquake shocks were felt in Dunedin at about 8.55 a.ill. to-day. The first shock, which was of very short duration, consisted of a sudden vibration. It was accompanied bv a low rumble.

A few seconds later, however, there was a prolonged shake, which lasted for about a quarter of a minute'. After ft commenced, the motion was not severe, and it was not accompanied by any sudden shocks, but the maintained shock was sufficiently strong to awaken sleepers, and to cause the loose fittings in the houses to be disturbed.

Two distinct sharp earthquake shocks wove felt this morning. They occurred at five minutes to nine, being very close together. A rumbling noise was audible during the shakes. No damage is reported.

During 'the past few days. 'Mount Ngaruhoe has been sending forth huge billowing volumes of smoke, accompanied at night by flashes of flame, earth tremors and rumblings. The activity lias been mainly from one vent and occasionally from a second, but. the third was unaffected. To-day the mountain was still belching smoke and there have been falls of light pumice and dust. There was similar, but greater, activity of Ngaruhoo in 192(5.
