A BIG INCREASE
IMPOST OF BRITISH MOTORS
FIGURE'S QUOTED IN HOUSE,
WELLINGTON, November 9
A remarkable increase in the number of British cars imported to the Dominion was quoted in the House this afternoon in refutation of the cabled comments of Mr T. Baxter, who recently visited New Zealand to urge regulation of dairy exports. It was shown that for the first nine months of the present year 1401 British cars were imported, while for the same time the number of foreign cars brought into the Dominion was only 36. The subject was raised by Mr Healy (Wairau), who asked if the Prime Minister proposed to take steps to reply to the misleading statement made by Mr Baxter.
In stating that he would be glad to see what could be done to correct a false impression Mr Forbes said it was quite clear that- Mr Baxter bad made a general settlement which was -not borne out by facts.
The following figures showing the number of cars imported were quoted by the Prime Minister to emphasise the point:
X T nited Kingdom. Foreign 1930 2867 2901 1931 1702 469 1932 2147 144 1933 (9 months only) 1404 36
