TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

South Westland Medical Service— Mr T. Y. Seddon, M.P., who hag been pressing the attention of the Government on the .matter of appointing a medical officeir for South Westland, has received the following reply from the Minister of .Health: “Regret that I cannot see my way to a larger subsidy than £l5O per annum. In order to obtain this subsidy, the residents must guarantee ~at least £2OO themselves.”

Fair aind Bazaar—There ,was , a n extremely large assemblage at St.' Mary’s Schoolroom, on the. occasion 0 f the opening night of the Dominion Fancy Fair and Bazaar in aid of. the building fund of St. Mary’s Presbytery, The fair .was .opened by the Rt. (Rev.- Dr Grimes, Bishop of Christchurch. The hall presented a busy scene and the various stalls did a flourishing business. Borough Council—The Hokitika Borough jCouncii met this week, there being present Messrs Beare ; C°ulson, Bock, .MeSherry, Breeze, Lloyd and Dr 'Macandrew. Mr Breeze moved that a I committee be set. up to consider the advisability of municipalising the Hokitika gas works. He though it was time the Borough stirred jtseJf in the matter. Mr, .Ooulson. moved an amendment that the. matter be ileft in abeyance. Mr Bea’re said that, the company was selling more gas now then a: any previous time df its existence. The matter was held over.

■West Coast Association—Aj meeting of the West Coast Association was held at the Hotel Cecil, Wellington, ...this week in .connection with the annual, re-union, and the following committee was appointed to make all necessary arrangements :—Messrs F. MicParland <2),,,E. J. Fitzgibbon, Brown, Vinsen, Bennie, Curran, B. Quinn and Mrs Thprley. . Westland Brick .Works—On Batur r day jpitntvng Jthc, machinery at the Westland brick works was given a good txiaii trun, when some 2000 bricks were turned out and stacked to dry. The machinery worked with general satis-

faction, and a very good brick was cut. . Mining—The first annual balance sheet of the New Big,River Gold Mining Co. discloses a very satisfactory state of affairs. Gold ,to tljte value of £18,260 was , obtained from. the .. battery and £594 from the cyanide pl-nt, •enabling the company- to pay £B4OO in dividends.
