BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING HELD LAST EVENING

The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening, there being present -the Mayor (Mr G. Perry) and Ci’s D. P. Stuart,' ,M. McG-avin, Ct. Heinz, A. Thompson, A. C. Armstrong, T. W. Duff, A R HI rook and J. King. An apology was received from Cr E. Teichelmann.

The minutes of the previous meeting were r-eod and confirmed.

The .(Mayor said he' would take this opportunity of voicing the Council's appreciation of two ex-Oouncillors, Mr D. J. Evans, who did not seek reelection owing to ill-health, and Mr K. M r . Heenan who was defeated at the

election. • The Council decided that letter, 3 of appreciation be sent to each, the wish being expressed that Cr Evans’ health would improve that he might take his place at the Council table at a future date

Returning Officer, Hokitika Borough, advising names of Councillors elected a« a result of poll taken on May 3. and forwarding a newspaper copy of public declaration.—Received. Under-Secretary, Department of Internal /ffairs, acknowledging notification of election of Mr 0, 'A, Pei'ry as Mayor of .Hokitika,—Received, Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, thanking Council for conveying commendatory resolution in .respect of the services rendered by Inspector H. •E. Bettel.—Received. Rector Hokitika District High School, thanking 'Council for co-operation in preparing a running track for the events in connection with the annua! sports of thp school.—Received. Sanitary Inspector, G r eymouth, forwarding a report of inspection, s made during April, 1933.—Received. Under-Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs. Wellington, requesting to be furnished with the names of the two gentleme in elected by this Council for the Hokitika Fire Board.—Town Clerk* to'reply. Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wet lington, forwarding .copies of extract ■from the report of J the ' Inspector of dangerous goods, in regard to loen premises and intimating that the out standing balance due to the Public Account for last yea r is 15^.—Received.

The County clerk, Manukau County Council, Auckland, urging that concerted movement in regard to collect'nn o f rates on rateable property in which the Crown is interested, either as mortgagee or owner, and asking that return showing the annual Joss -sustained for the last three yetar s be furnished—Received. • I

The Unemployment Committee wrote regarding the Council’s representation on the Committee, pointing out that the previous representatives, (Messrs Evans and TTeenan were no longe l members of the Council. The Mayor said that, although thesi gentlemen were not now on the Council they were .still the representatives, air:' until they resigned the Council coul l not appoint other delegates. Cr .McGavim said that they did nonecessarily halve to resign. It was in the Council’s power to make the appointments at once. Cr. Duff; Although fhey are no longer on the Council, the Council can’ re-elect them to represent the borough. The Mayor; We only recommem them.. The Board appoint.? them. The letter was received, and held over till next meeting, the Towr Clerk to ascertain if both gentlemen• were willing to act for the borough.

The finance committee’s recommenda-

tions that Mrs Coyle's rental on a re serve lease (be reduced, and that Mis: Andrews be appointed to a. full-time position on the staff were approved. The Returning Officer reported on the recent elections and stated that 92 electors exercised their vote, the low polling being due to the wet weather. Election expenses amounted to £3' 4s 6d. Owing to there being no election for the Harbour Board, no refund was due from that body. The election or* deputy-Mayor was proceeded with, Cr. King moving that Cr. Teichelmann be appointed.

Or. McGavin: I move that Cr. Thompson be Deputy-Mayor, as lie received the voice of the people at the election.

Cr. Thompson thanked Cr. McGavin, but declined to accept office. He would like to «j 3 ninate Cr. Elrock.

Cr. Elcock: .T appreciate Cr. Thompson’s action, but Cr. Teichelmann lias had longer service, and I would like to support his nomination.

Cr,- Heinz seconded Cr. Thompson’s naminStion, and Cr. Elcock was appointed Deputy-Mayor, for which honour M sbficfly returned thanks. The, following committees were elected Finance, the Council as a whole; Public -Works, C:r., Stuart, King, Heinz

and Thompson; Abattoir, Crs Armstrong, Heinz, and McGavin; Reserves, Crs. Duff, King, Elcock, McGavin and Thompson; Library, Crs. Stuart, Teichelmann, Thompson, Armstrong, and Duff.

The abattoirs report was ns follows: Stock slaughtered during April: 55 bullocks, 14 cows, 8 heifers, 231 sheep, 166 lambs, 20 pigs, 19 calves. Fees £66 2s, as against £7O 10s for April 1932.

The Finance Committee reported that receipts for April amounted to £459 19s 3d, and expenditure to £666 2s 4d

The District Fund Account showed a

debit of £BSB 9s 9d., Acountg totalling £558 were passed for payment.

The Council decided on the second Friday in each month, the finance committee to sit at 7.30 p.m., and the Council at 8 p.m.
