HOKITIKA COUNCIL MEETING

BUSINESS LAST EVENING

Th e Borough -Council 'met last evening when there were present the Mayor (Air G. A. Perry), and C>*s. T. W. Buff, A. R. Elcock, E. W. Keenan, G. Heinz land J. King. Apologie s were received from Crs. E. Teichehnann, D. J. Evans, A. C. Armstrong and D. P. Stuart.

In forwarding his apology, Qr. Evans expressed his thanks to the staff and oounciHors. land hoped the present members would he re-elected for a prosperous term of office.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

The :inwn v d correspondency was dealt r-ith as follows: It /was decided that Cr. Elcock and Mr Braddon ho re-elected as representatives of the Council on thp Hokitika Fire Board for the ensuing two years.

Mr H. B. Staines made application for domestic water supply to new residence in Gibson’s Quay.—Attended to. The Hokitika Ladies’ Hockey Club made .application for the use of N°. 2 field in Cass Square, as 'a playing field --Agreed to. Th e Sanitary Inspector, Greymouth, forwarded a report of inspection performed for March, 193,3.—Received. The Secretary Municipal Association, forwarded report on th P main points of the Urban Farm Lands Rating Act, 1932, which had been adopted by the

recent Municipal conference at Rotorua, and intimating that local bodies may, where necessary. now prepare

farm land lists.—Received. The chairman, No. 12 District TTigh-wa-yW Council, Greymouth, requested that main highways estimates for 192331 he now supplied, and pointed out that onlv a small amount will b ? available from the construction fund for new works.—Received and consented to. The chairman, No. 12 District. Highways Council, Greymouth, asked that the Council submit any applications in respect of the declaration of new main highways, but /stressed the point that the Board had .intimated that, in view of the financial position, there ns very

little prosppet of increasing the present mileage of declared main highways exrepf in exceptional circumstances. — Received.

The. Hokitika High -School Board, asked the Council to. nominate a representative nn the High School Board

for the enguing term.—Or. J. King reelected.

A deputation from the Rughv SubUnion waited on the C°nncil regarding the nUmber of Saturdays during the year on which charges of adnrss'on to Cass -Square could be made by it. The Sub-Union sought t 0 have the number of days extended, and he understood the Council had the power to permit up to twenty days, The Hub-Union desired that the Council gi-int it exclusive rights for /sixteen days. The Mayor said he had no objection to the extension to sixteen days and moved that the application be granted, th e motion being carried. The treasurer reported that receipts

for the period .amounted to £253 13s 4d and expenditure t 0 .£447 3s 'sd. The district fund account a debt of £685 19s. Accounts amounting to £666 2g 4d were passed for payment. The abattoir report showed the following stock slaughtered during the month:—C-ows 27, heifers 20, bullocks 40, sheep 245, lambs 200, pigs 4, calves 27. Condemned heifers 4, bullpcks 1., Fees amounted to £7l 10s a s against £77 2s for same month last year.

Ghesterman) reported that, during the month, Tailored St. drain was taken along to the five chain peg, over one hundred eighteen inch concrete pipes being laid. The ground was very loose and wet, composed of sand laying on a ■ clay bottom, and required timber to support the sides. We recovered about two hundred and fifty feet of six inch earthenware pipes and a number of nine inch. We dug out seven eighteen inch pipes from the corner of Hampden and Jollie Sts., the drain being filled in. On the 4th. we went to the Forks to repair a leak in the pipets crossing the Loft Hand Greek bridge, and one on Slip Hill, and one at Stewart’s Crossing near Stribb’.ing Sreek. On Sunday sth., a bad leak occurred outside the Masonic Hotel in Re veil St., this being repaired. Two new pipes wore put in the water main in Tancred St. at the corner of Gibsen’s Quay, and a blocked drain olean- | ed out -in th,e Quay between Rolleston land Davie Sts. A hurst pipe was repaired in Stafford St. outside Mr Duff’s, and the water service wa s renewed at Mr Coulson’s in Sewell St. A slip oeoured on the Lake road above Striblding C’ro'k near the Blue cutting towards the end of tho month carrying the pines apart on tin* night of the 33th., requiring three pipes to he replaced. A number of leaks were repaired about town. The depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 6 feet 10 inches.

The unemployed wore engaged on various works in and about the borough.
