SHIPMENT HOME

EXPERIMENTAL CONSIGNMENT*

MASTERTON, January 6. The “Port JFairy” leaving! Wellington on February 3, is to take a© part of 'her cargo an experimental shipment of chilled, beef. It is being consigned to T. Borthwick and Sous. Th© beef will be drawn entirely from the Wairarapa' district A start will be made with the /killing at Waingawa works towards the end of this month.

The shipment, which is purely an experimental one, will be the fir>=t one of . chilled beef from th e Wairarapa, and the second one from the Dominion since th© war.

A representative ~ of- Borthwick’s said that, thouerli there, wer e difficulties in connection with such a shipment, it was felt that these -.could bo overcome. They .were, using the ox,peri e nce gained When a shipment of chilled beef was sent to England from the firm’s iMoreton works' at Brisbane about three months ago. That shipment had proved satisfactory. The shipment on 'February 3 wiU consist of hindquarters only, and the whole process dr o ?' l killing to chilling will be carried out at Waingaw*. Wairarapa, it was stated, was one of the best parts of' New'Zealand in which to conduct the experiment,, as th© type of beef thor© was particularly good. In order to build up a trade, it was added, monthly shipments would be necesgary.

The Port Fairy is being specially fitted for th© carriage of chilled beef.

AUSTRALIA’S QUARTERLY QUOTA,

CANBERRA, January 6.

The Federal Minister for Commerce 'Mr Stewart, announce© that the export 'quota of mutton and lamb, for, .the •whole of Australia during the current quarter wiU b e nine hundred thousand carcases, .while the quota for the full year will be 4372 thousand 5 carcases. ! ;

The foregoing export figures are based on a new agreement which has been reached between the Empire Governments for an extension of the restriction on foreign, meat and Dominion meat import© into Bv.tain,

MEAT MARKING INQUIRY,

LONDON, January 5

At th© meat, 'marking inquiry, Mr Heywood said th© Commonwealth Government q&eqj; jq . of marking which would mak© the carcase ■ unsightly; also it would ‘be very expensive to apply the marfc as suggested. His Government thought it would double the present cost of grading. Th© Government would suppprt the /scheme if it could be proved .tjiatmarking would not damage th© meat or involve substantial extra cost. ;
