SENATE COMMITTEE’S FINDING

The .'Senate Judiciary tee, charged with the study of repeal proposal, voted to-day, in favour of a l'.eoucion for repeal of Cue controverted amendment. Acting with unprecedented speed, the committee, headed by Senator jj,u.i.e .sconsiu) agreed t 0 report the icpea.l resolution for submission to ♦State legislature.*, with protection for ■“dry” States, and authorisation foi Congress legislature against a return of the saloon. The vote was in effect four to one, witn the Sub-Committee agreeing unanimously to approve the -resolution, but Senator Borah reserved the right to oppose it on the floor. Other members of the committee were Senators Blaine, Herbert Walsh and DUI. It was the first time siuce national prohibition became effective thirteen years ago this month, that a Senate committee had voted, favourably for repeal. The resolution will be. formally reported to the full Judiciary Committee, which is overwhelmingly in favour of repeal, though there is wide division of sentiment over the proposal to give Congress the right to legislate against the return of the saloon. Sentaor Borah reserved the right to oppose the proposal to submit -the proposed amendment to legislatures instead of the State Conventions, as called fo r by both party platforms.
