APPEAL MADE FOR SUPPORT.

WELLINGTON, November 21

Following upon the passing of a resolution by the Motueka committee of the United Party that it could not support the Coalition candidate in the Motueka by-efcetion, Mr H. J. Hoiyoake, because of the presence of an Independent in the held, an, appeal for the support of Mr Hoiyoake has been issued by the leaders of tire Coalition, ‘Eft. Hon. G. W. Forles and lit. Hon. J. G. Coates. In a message. to Mr Hoiyoake last evening, the Raders, state:.— ~ o , “As joint leaders of the .Coalition, Party we can say that while much has been done to curtail expenditure and every effort made to bring our expenditure within revenue resources and to budget to balance the .public accounts of the country, there is still much to be done. The present fall in level of commodity prices and particularly of primary commodities, renders the future even more difficult. “Many proposals and suggestions have beam made, hut there 'seems to be no easy way through the problems that confront us. The great and increasing necessity for ensuring stability in our politics particularly at the present time lead's us to call on the electors of Motueka to support the official Coalition candidate or polling day, and wo therefore appeal to all our friends and supporters to endorse our selection and loyally and wholeheartedly to work for your return in support of the Government.” POLITICAL CAMPAIGN GOES ON meetings in many places. (Per Prsss Associaiiofo — Copyright.) MOTUEKA, November 21. Labour M’s.P. who have bsen addressing meetings of electors in the northern end of the Motueka electorate in support of Mr P. C. Webb, Labour Party and official Opposition canidate, have . met with gratifying receptions during the past week. At Thorpe on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Lee, M.P., spoke to a very large meeting, which followed enthusiastically his trenchant criticism of the Government and his convincing exposition of the Labour Party’s constructive policy. Mr P. Fraser, M.P., addressed an audience of nearly 500 at Takaka on Wednesday. He was given a splendid hearing. At the Tory stronghold Lower Moutere, Mr W. J. Jordan, M.P., spoke to 60 persons on Wednesday, and in 'a* quiet and impressive manner gained' their complete sympathy. Mr W. J. Poison, M.P., for Stratford, has been speaking on behalf of Mr Hoiyoake, and to-night will give an address at Ngatimoti, Mr J. N. Massey, M.P. for Franlslyn spoke on Saturday at Riwaka on behalf of Mr Hoiyoake. Mr A. Harris, M.P., for Waitemata, gave an address on behalf of Mr Hoiyoake at Lower Moutere on Saturday evenjng, Mr Hoiyoake spoke to-night at Tasman, and to morrow goes to Riwaka. Hoiyoake, an appeal for the support of Mr Hoiyoake has been issued by the leaders of the Coalition, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes and Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, Mr Webb, candidate, addressed a crowded and enthusiastic meeting of electors at Landing schoolroom on Saturday night. Mr L. Bell, president of the Farmers’ Union, occupied the chair. Mr Webb dealt chiefly with, the position of the farmers, past and present, and the Labour platform as it affects the farmer, in a clear and concise manneij. At the conclusion of his address a hearty vote of thanks and confidence in Mr Webb and the Labour party was carried unanimously, on the motion of Mr H. Betts, seconded by Mr James O’Regan. Both speakers emphasised that the Eaboivf party was the only solution of the problem of relieving the plight of the farmers. A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman concluded one of the largest meetings ever held at the Landing.
