The stated decision cf the Government to carry into effect the recommendations of the National Economy Commission that a number of the deeds and stamps offices in the snwller centres, including those at Hokitika should he closed, formed the subject, of discussion at Friday’s meeting of the Hokitika Borough Conned, when it was decided to make an emphatic protest against the a.irnounced decision to close down these, offices in Hokitika. Members of the Council pointed out that the proposed closing would hardly have the effect that was intended, cf reducing the cost of administration. At present the offices at Hokitika are suitably housed in the Government BuiM'ings,-where all (he necessary strong i and fire, proof rooms are ‘available for the carrying on of the business of the departments affected'. There is an increasing amount of business being transacted in the local office, and the closing of it would entail a considerable amount of unnecessary delay and a su, slant ini increase in cost to those having to avail themselves of the services of the offices. A protest has already been made to the authorities and in view of the very small amount of possible savings that can he made by the proposed chnnge, it would not appear to be advisable to carry out the suggested course, . which will undoubtedly cause much inconvenience and extra expense to those having business with the Office. The matter have also been taken up at Greymouth where the Law Soeitev has moved in protest recognising that the closing of the local office would cause much inconvenience and expense in other centres of the West Coast, who would find much delay would he caused if the business had to be transacted through on© of the distant cities, the local office being in -such easy access., enabling business to be transacted prompt!/.
