BOROUGH CONTROL

MEETING OF HOKITIKA COUNCIL. THE BUSINESS LAST EVENING. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and Crs., J. King, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, A. it. Elcock, T. W. Duff and E. W. Heenan. Apologies were received from. Crs. D. J. Evans, D. P. Stuart, and E. Teichelmann. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE.

The Hokitika Croquet Club wrote, ’asking for domestic water supply to the Club’s premises at the corner ot Stafford and Jollie Streets.—Granted. Mrs J. J. Breeze and family, acknowledged the Council’s expression of sympathy.—Received. The N.Z. Refrigerating Coy., intimated that 63 sheep were delivered into Hokitika during the month of August.—Received. The Secretary, Municipal Assn., intimated that 'the executive committee li'ad under consideration a remit which provided that, where a special rate is struck, for hospital and charitable aid purposes, the amount of this rate be •shown separately in rate demand.— Received.

The Public Trustee forwarded cancelled Coupons at £B7 10s in vespem, of interest on abattoirs Joan due on September Ist., 1932.—Received. The Town Clerk, Rotorua, forwarded particulars of accommodation availably, in connection with the Municipal conference.—Received. The Department of Agriculture wrote pointing out that under Clause 12 of the regulations, no alterations or additions shall be made to any slaughterhouse unless c/ficial approval is first obtained.—Received.. The chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, notified that the amount of subsidy granted fer maintenance of the main highway through the borough from April Ist., 1932, to March 31st., 1933, is £219, being £3 for £l. Received. The Treasury advised that 75 per cent, of rate subsidy for year ending March Ist., 1933, amounting to £ll3 18s bad b*een cr edited to District Fund Account.—Received. The foreman (Mr Chesterman), made application for 14. days annual leave. —Granted. Same from W. C. C. Wieblitz.— Granted. G, Sutherland, Hokitika, application c or second hand dealer’s license.— Granted. Wm. White, Gibson’s Quay, made application for permission to erect a but on Gibson’s Quay Road Reserve, between Livingstone St. and Town Belt. The section selected has a frontage of about three chains.— Granted.

The Chairman, Greymouth Harbour Board, intimated that the Government proposed to adopt a proposal of the National Expenditure Commission,to abolish the annual payment of £12,000 to the Greymouth Harbour Board, and a« this would mean crippling the finances of the Board, the Board now appealed to local bodies to forward a protest to the Government against the abolition of annual subsidy.

The Mayor said that lie liad sent the following telegram to the Premier:— “Hopei that Economic Commission’s recommendation relation to withdrawal of Grey Harbour subsidy mil not he given effect to as such is clearly 'a breach of agreement made with the Board and would most seriously affect Harbour Board’s finance and cause stoppage of absolutely essential works now in progress. The Premier had replied acknowledging the telegram and promising consideration.

The Mayor's action was approved. Mrs Eliza Knight wrote asking that Reserve No. 535 Sale Street, be cleared of growth and drawing attention- to the unsatisfactory condition of fence between her property and the reserve. Decided applicant be asked to pay half the cost. The Returned Soldier’s Association, Hokitika wrote regarding the rates on the Soldier’s Hall.—Received. The Hokitika. Amateur Swiinminr Club pointed out that the six inch pipe which drains the swimming baths is inadequate, and asked that a 12 inch pipe be installed. <Ji. 1 Councillor said that it was strange that the request should have been left to such a time when finance was so difficult. The 1 Mayor: No-, we have not got the funds. It is too big a job. It was decided that the cost was too great for the Council to undertake the job at the present time. Another Councillor: The Council has already been very good to the Club.

The Hokitika Fire Brigade wrote asking permission for use of Square on November 12, and also seeking permission to make a charge, upon the occasion of the fire brigade demonstration .—Granted.

The financial statement showed receipts £9BB 10s 3d, and expenditure £1047 2s 3d. There was a credit of £266 10s lid in the district fund account. Accounts totalling £2449 18s 5d were passed for payment. The following stock was slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs during September Sheep 294, cows 6, pigs 5, calves 4, heifers 38, bullocks 41. One bullock and one cow were condemned, W, Milligan, application for domestic water supply to residence.—Granted. The Health Insnector, Greymouth, asked that drain inlets in Hall St. be trapped, and intimated that trap inlets he substituted for stand-pipes in all pined drains. Mr L. P. K. Gooch made application for a depot for- storage of goods at premises at the corner of of Staffard and Sale Streets.—Granted, subject to regulations. Messrs Keenan and Nancekivell intimated that they had relinquished their lease for kerbside petrol pump in Stafford St. which belongs to the Vacuum Oil Coy.—Received.

FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman (Mr F. Chesterman) reported on work done during the month as follows: — The drain across Sale Street at Park Street was deepened and 6 inch earthenware pipes put in place of a box dlrain, which h'ad collapsed, at the ,section recently purchased by Mr Stephens. Weld Street drain on the south side between Sale and Rollest&n streets was cleaned out, Park street drain on the south side between B’rittan arid Hall streets was cleaned out, two traps were put- in Rolleston street drain on the west B'de between Stafford aad Sales .streets, the water channel on the side of Besl.ey street was graded and a d°wn P 1 ? 6 put down outside Mr Wild’s residence, Spoil from pit stripping was spread on the side of Sale street, some _ 51) loads being used filling up a depression. Bealey street footpath oA the east side Between Hampden and Park street was gravelled with screened grayel, the distance being ten chains, and the footpath in Park street on the south .side between Rolleston and Davi e streets was finished with gravel.

Two foot crossing -and one nvide crossing were renewed at 'Mr Ward’s corner of Rolleston street and Gibson s Quay. Pipe making was carried out by Mr Weib’.itz assisted by two relief workers, on the latter two weeks of the month, about one hundred eighteen inch concrete pipes being made. A water connection was put in at Mi 'Ruthven’s in Hall street and the water connection at Mr Shaw’s in Hampden street was repaired. Concrete coverings were put over a valve on Gibson’s Quay at the corner of Davie street, and over another at the corner of Stafford and Rolleston -streets, and a buret pipe (repaired at Tucker Flat on the 23rd. A number of leaks was repaired about the town. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was 8 feet 5 inches.

THE UNEMPLOYED. Relief workers were engaged on the botanical reserve, which has been grubbed o"T rusnes and gorse, and the debris is mow being put in heaps. JolMe street hill is still being graded, and the crown of the bill still require-’ to be cut down. The gravel 'pit in gale street was gripped of clay, 'and a considerable quantity of gravel brought down. The entrance to the cemetery has 'been widened and the fence and gate is now being moved further back. The town reserves are employing a number under Mr Herring, and a number at the aerodrome under Mr Muir. Two iare levelling at the en “ trance to the racecourse and grubbing out gorse, and two hav e been scytbeing growth on the- (sides of the -streets, and two or three have been working on the harbour.
