STRATFORD, July. 7. The Stratford Winter Show was officially opened by the Hon. R. -Masters ‘last night. The Minister referred to 'the excellence 0 f the exhibits, and the extraordinary progress made during the nine years oi' the Show’s existence. The. necessity for finding additional markets for New Zealand produce he stressed on the lines of his recent address at Palmerston North, the Minister referring to markets await ing developments in the East and Europe.
Dealing with the Eastern markets. Mr Masters stated that the ahgumem of lack of shipping facilities no longer applied, as both the Union Co., and Japanese Line were prepared to provide steamers. "I have investigated the position, and find that, .markets exist, but it is not my function to sell the goods. That is the province of the various Control Boards who will be well advised to take necessary action.” The Minister referred to the fact that - Britain must always he the principal market, hut spoke of the danger of pouring such a large proportion of our produce into one market. He quoted/figures to show that South Africa, Canada, and Australia were already de-veloping-other outlets, and he sounded a’-strong note of warning against New Zealand’s policy of putting all their eggs into one basket. During his address, there were frequent expressions of agreement with his remarks, And at the conclusion, the .Minister received an ovation from -the large audience.
