BUTTER BOUNTY
NOT APPLICABLE IN DOMINION. ■OWING TO LARGE EXPORTS. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) WELLINGTON, July 6. Reasons why the Australian system of providing an export bounty on produce, known as “The Paterson Plan,” would not work in New. Zealand/ were explained to the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union by , the Secretary of the Dairy Export Control Board, My T. C. Brash. He said the Paterson Plan was aimed at keeping up the price of butter in the local market. In New Zealand, the farmer was being aaked to seU his butter at’ lass than it cost him to produce it. The Paterson Plan would be of no use to New Zealand for the reason that New Zealand exported all but one-sixth of her butter. Australia, on the other hand, exported only one-third of her butter, Mr Brash said that the dairy producer in Australia was not having a very difficult time. In the best districts this year, the Australian dairy farmer would be getting as much as Is 5d per pound for butter-fat, as against lid or Is 'which the New Zealand farmer would receive. That'was due partly to the Pater, son Plan, and partly to the exchange. For the Paterson Plan to be of any benefit to New Zealand, it would be necessary to send the, price of butter up so high, that the public would not stand for it. / TARANAKI OUTPUT DECLINES. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 6. fThej dairy produce output of Taranaki 1 ; for , the . first time for some years, shows a slijght decline for the past ■year, 'The chees 0 exports increased by 20,000 crates. The butter exports decreased by 31,000 boxes. In the opinion of experts, the decrease is dua partly to a poor season and partly to a restricted use of fertilisers.
