BOROUGH COUNCIL.

THE MONTHLY MEETING REPORTS BY OFFICERS. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening; when there were present; the Mayor (Mr G. Peiry), and Councillors: T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, E : . Teichelmann, G. Heinz, A. C. Armstrong, J. King and D. J. Evans. An apology was received from Councillor D. P. Stuart. The minutes of the previous meeting, and the special meeting were adopted, and the outward correspondence approved. Inward correspondence was received and dealt with as follows: J. M. Gardiner, Hokitika, inquiring what price the Council would accept for Sections 1391, and T39'2, at the corner of Park and 'Sale St.—Referred to Town Clerk. Rover Hockey Club, application for use of Cass Square as a playing field.— I Granted. N.Z. Refrigerating Co., intimating that the following quantities of meat were delivered into Hokitika for the •month of February, 1932: —18 sheep, ’ll lambs.—Received. Hokitika Fire Board, notifying under Section 21 of the Fire Brigade’s 'Acte, 1926, that the contribution of ■the Hokitika Borough Council for the year commencing Ist. April, 1932, will be £292 10s payable’ in quarterly payments of £73 2s fid on the Ist. day of April, July, and October, 1932, and January, 1933.- Received and approvod, : Town Clerk, Gore, asking for prices lof interment and other charges,— Received.

Secretary, Municipal Association, of N.Z., asking that those Local Bodies who will have extreme difficulty in respect of their overdraft liability for 31st. March, 1932, to furnish full particulars in order that the Association may, where necessary make adequate representations to the Government to pass legislation for the relief of such Local Bodies.—Received.

Chairman, No, 12 District. Highways Council, intimating that the Main Highways Board have decided to appoint a full time Inspector for No. 12 District, without requiring the Local Authorities to make any contribution, but that such Inspector will only operate on the Main Highway.—Received.

District Engineer, Public Works, Greymouth, asking for particulars of Main Highways liabilities at the 31:3:32.—Received

Kanieri Electric,’ Ltd., advised that the lighting system at the Town Hall was in need of overhaul, and it was decided that the matter be attended to.

The financial statement for last period showed that receipts totalled £703 63 od, and payments £BOO 3s Id. There was a debit of £407 7s lid in the district fund accounts. Accounts amounting to £675 17s were passed for payment. It was decided that the Council subsidy to the Library be increased by £2O.

Stock slaughtered at municipal abattoirs for March was as follows: Cows 15, heifers 14, bullocks 53, sheep 308. lambs 212, .pigs 8, calves 26. One cow was condemned. Abattoir fees totalled £77 &, as against £7l 17s for March last year. FOREMAN’S REPORT.

Streets and footpaths.—Hamilton St. between Sewell and Revel! Sts. v>u.s tar sealed, Stafford St. footpath on the south side between Sewell and Revell Sts. wa,s repaired with ashphait and tar sealed, Hampden St. footpath on the south side between Rolleston and Davie St. was gravelled witli screened gravel, about eighty loads being used, and a quantity of screened gravel was laid down in front ot Moynihan’s in Hampden St, and at Gooch’s corner of Stafford and Sale Sts.

Drains.—The drain at the corner ot Tancred and Stafford St. was blocked, this was uncovered and cleaned out, and the drain leading to Sewell St. drain, in front of the Roman Catholic Church caved in, this was repaired. Three truck loads of stone was brought from Kanieri for repairing the bank of the river, at the outlet of the East Belt drain.

Water. —Four new pipes were put ’.n the line running through Cass Square. The water services at Berendt’s and Hart’s in Davie St. were repaired, new washers were put in a fire plug in Hamilton St., and the valves at the corner of Revell and Hampden Sts., and Fitzherbert and Hampden Sts. were repacked, while a number of leaks in different parts of the town were repaired. The average depth of water in tho reservoir for the month was six feet. UNEMPLOYED. A. number of the unemployed arc engaged on the' Botanical Garden reserve, grubbing out the growth and fencing. Four are spvtheirvg the growth on the street sides. Two are out at tho abattoirs, three or four arc on Cass Square, and Macandrew Square; and four or five were engaged in putting a line for electric lighting to the tip head, and a small number at tho aerodrome.
