FRIDAY, MARCH 11. The Council met at 7.3 U pan. Present'The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry;, Crs. T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, A. R. Elcock, A. C. Armstrong, J. King, U. P. Stuart, G. Heinz,. D. J. Evans and Dr. Teichlemann. The minutes were confirmed and the outward correspondence approved. Inward Correspondence, From M. S. Andrewjs, application tor annual leave.—Received; reqfuest granted. From Eastern Petone Ratepayers’ Association, Wellington, asking for particulars re rating on unimprovea values. —Received; Town Clerk to supply. ) From D. Breeze, Secretary, Poultry Club, intimating that Messrs J. JBreeze, F. Groufsky and W. Hall, have been appointed trustees of the Horticultural Hall. —Received and approved. From Secretary Hokitika Fire Board, forwarding extract from report of the Inspector of Fire Brigades, drawing attention to the necessity of providing adequate water supply for fire purpqses in Davw St., Rollejston Stv, Beach St., and the north end of Sewell Street. —Received.

From Secretary, Hokitika Fife Brigade, asking for the use of Cass Square for Fird Brigade Demonstration Saturday, March 12th, and authority to charge ail admission fee. —Received and agreed to. From Secretary Returned Soldiers’ Association, Hokitika, application for permission to hold a Sacred concert in the Princess Theatre on Monday, the 25tli April, Anzae night, and to charge an admission fee of 2/- and 1/-. —Received and permission granted. From Arthur Appleton and Huia Appleton, application for a twenty-one years’ lease of one acre ol part Municipal Reserve No. 466. —Received ; referred to Town Clerk with power to act.

,From Chief Inspector of Explosives, Wellington, intimating that an inspection of local Dangerous Goods Depots had been made, and that- the conditions of storage were found to be satisfactory.—Received.

From Secretary, the Central Licensing Authority, Wellington, intimating that South Island Sittings of the Central Licensing Authority under the Transport Licensing Act. 1931, commence at Dunedin on the 14th instant, and asking that the names and addressse of proposed witnesses be notified.—Received.

From State Fire and Accident Insurance Office, Wellington, asking that a “contracting out” agreement be executed hi respect of a worker.—Received and apprtiyed. , . From Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Gfeymotith, asking for details of plant owned by Council, and used on Main Highways,—Receive ed; Town Clerk to reply to. From Auditor-Generul, in respect of Section 40 (h), Municipal Corporation Act, 1930, and intimating conditions under which the constitutionary limit can be increased for the purchase of timber from the Kanieri-Hokitika Sawmilling Company.—Received.

Mr Heinz suggested the matter stand over the present. Mr Elcock said that the Superintendent stated at the last meeting that at the upper end of Sewell Street if there were a fire, the Brigade would have to stand by and and look on, as the water would not be able to reacli the locality. The Mayor suggested the overseer and Town Clerk report as to the cost involved and the valued of properties affected. This proposal was agreed to, Dr. Teiehlemann seconding.

Treasurer’s Report. From Treasurer reporting—Receipts £464/17/6; payments £ll7O/17/3; debit balance £330/15/-. —Received. Accounts amounting to £631/6/1 were passed for payment. FOREMAN’S REPORT. Streets.—Hampden St. and Park St. which were scoured badly from t'he flood of January 29th were reconditioned, gravelling taking the first week of the month. About eighty-five loads of screened gravel were ‘carted 011 ; also north Fitzherbert St. and the North Belt repaired. Twenty-five loads were canted on Livingston St. outside Mr Hncki'll’s. Davie St. crossing into Hampden St.| was widened six feel. Watpr.—Six new pipes were put in Tnncred St. and Gibson Quay intersection, two new pipes at the comer of Rolleston -St. and Gibson Quay, and two new pipe's at it he corner ol Hamilton and Sewell Streets, while two chains oif pipes were put in the line ITau Ifau hill between the Reservoir and •Han Han road. Water .services were put in at H. .lores’ comer of Healey and Stafford Streets, and at the Farmers Cenfial Meat Co., corner of Fitzherbert and Stafford .Streets. Fire plugs were repaired in l'.uvell an 1 T’ni ; in Sfree,.-,. new washers being repaired. Grossing s were put in at Mr •(. Robinson's in Jollie -St. and Mr J. Wiliam's, Gibson Quay. A good fall of gravel was brought down in Safe St. pit. The average depth -of water in the- Reservoir for tie' loomh \>as 6ft 9in.—Receivi 1. From manager Abattoirs reporting for month of February there were slaughtered :—l6 cows, 22 heifers, 39 bullocks, 249 sheep, 161 lambs, 7 pigs, lo calves. Condemned : 1 cow. Fees lor period ' '£64 7s. (Same period last year £6l 175.) —Received. 1 GENERAL. I The Town Clerk reported that tenders: /had been opened and the tender of ■Cyril Coyle for the supply of beach grit at 2.s per yard had been accepted and that the tender of Cyril Coyle for 140 /silver pine posts at Is per post had also been accepted. It was resolved that the erection of a wire fence round the Botanical Reserve which was first to be cleaned up, be then carried out. The Mayor moved that the regulation forbidding motor car traffic in Revell /Street on Saturday nights be extended sine /lie.
