NEW EXPORTS TO BRITAIN. LONDON, January 9. Champagne costing 4/6 a bottle is the latest Soviet export to Britain. This price compares with 16/- to 22/6 for the usual range of French champagne, but the Soviet wine is sweet and highly liqueured. The “Daily Mail” points out that the low price is puzzling experts, as, in addition to the cost of production and transport, the British duty on the liquor is 2/7$ a bottle. Apparently the exporters are prepared to sell at a loss, resulting in the question whether they are aiming to oust French champagne from Britain. The champagne costs 6/- in Russia.
