V HOKITIKA BOROUGH AFFAIRS. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening wlieu ithere were present the Mayor (Mr G. Perry) and Councillors, T. W. Buff, E. W. Heenan, E. Teichelmann, J. King, G. Heinz, I). P. Stuart and A. C. Armstrong. Apologies we.e received from Cl’s- D. J. Evans and A. R. Elcock. The ordinary meeting was preceaed , by a special meeting held for the pur- < pose of adopting annual balance sheet. | The latter having been approved, it was decided, on the motion of Crs. Teichelmann and Heenan, that the Mayor attach bis signature to same. The Mayor congratulated the Town Club on having produced a balance sheet without a tag. Tenders for the printing of the bal{i.r/je sheet were received from »tlie Guardian. Co. and the "Westland Printing Works, tint of the former at £6 17. s 6d being received. The Council then adopted the ordinary meeting procedure. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. Inward correspondence was received as follows: From R. Stuart, notification to i-eliriquisli tenancy of Reserve No--537, from the bat. December, 1931. Received. Secretary, Reel ton School Picnic Committee, a-king for the use of Cass Square on the 3rd. February next for annual picnic.— Aonroved. «N.Z. Refrigerating Coy., intimating the following meat was delivered into Hokitika during the month of November, 1931:—53 sheep, 7 lambs.—Received.

Mrs I- R. Hackell, asking that Livingstone Street, opposite her residence be widened so as to permit a motor , vehicle to turn.—Granted. • Commissioner of Transport re Trans- j port Licensing Act, 1931, and asking for a copy of all legal restrictions ns regards both speed and weight, which Council considers should be taken into account by the Transport Licensing Authorities. The Town Clerk said that he did 1 not think this would affect Hokitika | very much. The matter was a little vague.—Received. Hokitika Cycling Club, application for pernv .sion. to use Cass Square for Snorts Meeting on Ist. January, 1932, with the right- to charge for admission. Received. Health Inspector, Gveymouth, notification of Infections Disease, and report of work performed for December, 1931. Received. The financial statement showed a net debit of £309 10s 3d. Accounts amounting to ,£259 4s 8d were passed for payment. Stock slaughtered at abattoir during December was a's follows : —Cows 4, heifers 24, bullocks' 51, sheep 308, lambs 227, pigs 11. calves 5. Cue sheep was condemned. Fees amounting to £73 (id Od as against £76 19s fid for the corresponding period hist year. ft was decided to impose a penalty of 10 ner cent, on all rates outstanding after February Gth. FOREMAN'S REPORT. 'Streets and Footpaths.—The streets and footpaths were chipped and cleaned ' ; n most parts of the town, the spoil was used in' levelling the low sides of the streets and covering the sand on part of the dump road. The footipath on the north side of Hampden St. was

gravelled with screened gravel from Roj'leston St. up t-o the Racecourse, a distance of about twenty chains. 37 yards of rough gravel was carted to Stafford St. widening, between Livingston St. and the East Belt, and the highways were dragged from the North to the East Belts, the County lorrit* being used to haul the drag. Drains.—The drain on the south side of Park ’St., between Davie an cl Jollie (Streets, was further extended to within }[ a chain from Jollie St., the distance exacavat-d now being four and a half chains. Sale 'St. drain on the east side, between Stafford and Weld Streets was flushed out with water from the main. This drain would be all the better taken across Sale St. to the west side, and connected with the concrete drain in which it would then he flushed out in wet weather. Water.—Eighteen pipes were put in the line in Tucker Elat, with pipes brought from, the Lake, a large number of six inch bands being recovered.
