The banking returns for the December quarter reveal the following changes, as compared with the figures of a year ago:— £ DECREASES. Fixed deposits 1,860,038 Coin and Bullion 520,073 The three classes of deposits compare as under, the last December quarter’s ones being given in parenthesis:, Government deposits £1,195,845 (£1,859,40); free deposits £16,145,438 (£18,597,839); fixed deposits £34,635,595 (£32,775,557); total £51,976,878 (£53,232,803), Advances total £50,317,688, as compared with £53,214,074 for the last December quarter. The Discounts totalled £699,093, compared with £1,'168,074. The excess of advances over deposits is £235,748, as compared with £3,009,352 last year, The total note circulation is £5,926,902, and the total of coin and bullion is £6,872,637.
