GOVERNOR RESIGNS

SIR JOHN CHANCELLOR. SOLDIER-ADMINISTRATOR. RUGBY, July. 13. The King has accepted the resignation of Sir John Robert Chancellor, G.C.M.G., G.0.V.0., High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief in Pal e.stine, and High Commissioner of Trans-Jordan, and has approved of the apointment of Lieutenant-General Arthur Grenfell Wauclione, C. 8., C.M.G., C.1.E., D. 5.0., general Officer Commanding the Northern Ireland District, in his place.

Sir John Chancellor has had a remarkable career as a soldier and colonial administrator. Born in 1870, he passed through Woolwich and joined the Royal Engineers. In India he sei’V'ed in the Dongola and Tirnh cam* pafgns, being present at the famous storming of the heights of Dargai, In 1902 he passed through the Staff College and was appointed assistant-secre-tary of the Committee of Imperial Defence. His first governorship came in 19.11 when he went to Mauritius, and then to Tobago and Trinidad. He was the first Governor appointed in Southern Rhodesia after representative govtrument was instituted. It was due to hi- skillful direction through the early years that the new administration was placed so firmly on its feet, and to his personal interest in every move for the welfare of the settlers. In 1928 Sir John' succeeded Field Marshal Viscount Rlumer in Palestine, where His firm but sympathetic handling of the Arab-Jew riots brought him into pro minence,

Born in 1874, General Wauchope was educated in' Scotland and at Repton, and joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, iater transferring to the Black Watch. During the South African War he was severely wounded, and was mentioned in despatches and award the D.S.O. During 1914-1918 he v commanded the 2nd Battalion of the Black Watch in France and Mesopotamia, rising to command a brigade, and for a time the 7tli Division. After the war he was a member of the inter- 1 allied Commission of Control in Berlin and then commanded a division of the Territorial Force in England. He was appointed to the Northern Ireland Command in 1929.
