We were favoured by the courtesy of Mr A. Cut bush this morning to view whitebait, just hatched. The ova were secured at the back of the training wall on the north side of the rivet. The ova were placed in a bottle of water last evening about 5 o’clock and this morning had hatched out and were swimming round. They are about a quarter of an inch or so in length and like a thread. The ova were discovered during the recent visit of Captain Haves of the Marine Department who has been making a special enquiry into whitebait. The exhibit is quite an interesting one and confirms the .theory liti recently established of the habits of tho whitebait, and its spawning. Some interesting photographs of the spawning places have also been secured.

The urgent need for refrigeration as Y the most hygienic method of storing perishable foodstuffs is obvious on the West Coast when one realises how far we are from the city markets. Compare putting foodstuffs in a large box with a block of ice, from Tuesday till Friday as against storing same in an automatic refrigerator. Cold storage and ice.are both of utmost importance in the retail fish trade and has proved so successful that it would be impossible to disover in the cities even a single shop where cool storage is not provided. If may he truthfully said that in the modern fish and small goods shops, refrigeration is absolutely essential. Cold storage is needed for perishable foodstuffs of all kinds. It is pleasing to note that The Peoples’ Depot in .Revel! Street has installed at a cost of £3OO on up-to-date automatic refrigerator and cool storage plant.
