The Council met at. 8 p.m. Present:—Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), J. King, A. ]{. Elcock, T. W .Duff, I>. J. Evans, G.’ Heinz, E. W. Heenan, A. C. Armstrong, and Dr Teichel-

mann. The minutes were confirmed and out_ ward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From W. A. Rowe, secretary Hokitika Cycling Club, asking for use ot Cass Square for cycling sports, 11th April, and also for permission to charge Is admission for adults, children free.—Received; request granted. From J. Cutbush, application ior 14 days annual leave from the 7th April.—Received and request granted.

From H. C. Keys, Davip Street, : complaining that the road in front of his property is flooded in wet weather fund asking that the Council taKe action.—Received. Mr Evans moved the work he commenced on Monday, seconded by Mr Duff and carried. From Mrs L. R. Hackell, Livingstone Street, asking that footpath to her residence be cleared of blackberry.—Received; referred to Foreman. From Under Secretary, Department of Internal Affairs acknowledging the receipt of notification of election of Mressrs A, R. F.leock, nml W, R> Brnddon to represent this. Council on the Hokitika Eire Board.—Received. From Hon. Secretary, Progress League (Westland Branch) asking for donation towards activities of League for the coming year.—Received ; a reply to be sent regretting inability, to make a grant at the present time. Two new pipes px were put in the water main at the corner of Sale and Stafford Streets. ■M Three days were spent repairing the ' m pipe line, one day on Tucker Flat and two days between the Forks and the Lake.

A number of unemployed started work on the 17th at the east belt, the growth was cleared off, and the excavation of a drain started, also Jollie Street cutting to connect Hampden Street with Stafford Street, while a number were put on at the Cemetery cutting growth and levelling the paths and at the Abattoirs cleaning out the ■drains, and cutting down the gorse in paddocks, satisfactory progress being made at each place. The average dept of water in the Reservoir 'for the month was 3ft 3in. —Received. It -was resolved that some necessary gravelling be curried out on some foothpaths recently cencrete kerbed. The question of asphalting work authorised at last meeting was referred to and then Mr Duff moved that it be an instruction to the Works Committee to have the asphalting of road corners done at once; seconded by Mr Heenan and carried. Mr Armstrong complained that the work of the Public Works Committee had been taken out of their hands, nnd that was the reason why the Committee had not been called togeth-

lt was resolved that several works enumerated he put in hand at once. The question of attention to Sewell Street drain was referred to and the Mayor stated that the work being attended to at the north belt was having effect.

On the suggestion of Mr Heinz it was resolved that it ho an instruction to the Foreman in time of flood to see that tlie north belt drain was kept open.

' From Manager of Abattoirs reporting for month of February, stated the following stock had been slaughtered: 21 cows, 21 heifers, 37 bullocks, 180 sheep, 170 lambs, 7 pigs, 17 calves. Condenmned, 1 heifer. Fees for month CGI 17s, (for same last year £66 10s).—Received. The Council rose at 8.30 p.*a.
