WESTLAND HOSPITAL BOARD

MONDAY. MARCH 9. The Board met at 8 p.m. Present Messrs J. J. Breeze (Chairman), \V. Jeffries, W. Evenden, H. Wells, T. W. Duff, A. R. Elcock, G. Davidson and M. Keenan. 'l’he minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. The Chairman referred to the death of Mr Arthur Clifton a former valued member of the Board, who had given many years of service to the Board. He moved that the Board place on record its deep sense of the loss sustained by the death of Air Arthur Clifton, a valued member of the Board for many years, and that tile resolution be forwarded to the members of the family conveying the d°ep sympathy of the Board in the loss they have sustained. Seconded by Mr Duff and carried, members standing in silence.

INWAR 1) CORRESPONDENCE. From Hon. W. Stalhvoi'thy, Wellington, stating contributions to the Cancer Research Fund were not validated for payment by Hospital Boards.—Received. The Secretary reported that the decision did not affect the Board as their unauthorised expenditure was well within the limit allowed by law. From Dr. Watt, Health Department, Wellington, in reference to architects fees; also enquiring for further particulars of the agreement with Timber Workers Union.—Received. Mr Jeffries moved that the. writer be referred to previous correspondence and the agreement previously approved by DC Yalintirie. Seconded by Mr Duff and carried. From Chairman Napier Hospital Board acknowledging with Uia-'ks. message of sympathy in connection with the ’quake disaster.—Received. From Mayor of Napier (Mr J- Vigor Brown), a similar message.—-Received.

From Dr. J. C. Mclntyre notifying proposed visit to Hokitika for the purpose of inspecting T.B. patients.—Received ; the Secretary reported there were no patients for inspection at the hospital. Mr Jeffries said that if there was nothing for the officer to view, it seemed only a waste of money for him to come to Hokitika. Mr Jeffries said there were officers of the various departments travelling all over the Dominion. Tn this case there were no patients for Dr. Mclntyre to see if he came. By stopping him from coming there would be at least a day’s travelling expenses saved the country.

After further discussion Air Davidson moved that Dr. Mclntyre be notified that his services would not be required at Hokitika on this visit. Seconded by Air Jeffries. ATr Duff said ex-patients may desire to see the Doctor, and be did not therefore agree with the motion. Tn reply to an enquiry the Secretary said notification of the visit had been sent to seven ex-patients. Owing to the circular having been sent out the mover withdrew his motion. From Canterbury Hospital Board forwarding account for printed circulars. Received. It was resolved to return the account disclaiming liability. From Unemployment Board, circulars in reference to unemployed.—Received. From Secretary School for Deaf, Sumner, in reference to maintenance due on an inmate from this district. —Received; left to Secretary to reply to. From T. Armstrong applying for annual leave.—Received ; request granted. From T. W. Bruce, Secretary, applying for annual leave.—Received and granted.

Mr Keenan moved that the Board regrets that the Timber Workers Union had not kept their promise to pay their account for maintenance of members for the period as promised by February 28 and that the Board take the necessary steps to secure payment. Seconded by Mr Davidson and carried. From Mr Kenning, applying for anlial leave.—Received; request granted. The Farm produce return for the month showed a return of £B7/16/1 (including 2027 quarts of milk £42/4/9, 12 sheep £l9/19/6). —Received.

MEDICAL OFFICER FOR KUAIARA

Applications were received from J. Basil Page, ALB.. Tolaga Bay and C. if. Riieheu, ALB. C.H.M., Gisborne. The applications were ordered to be sent on to the Kumara Medical Association for consideration. MATRON’S REPORT.

The following are the requirements for the coming year.—Painting of wards, Administration Blocks, corridors and also corridor leading to kitchen. Repair of mattreses. China for wards.—R ecei ved. Air Davidson moved that a committee consisting of town members enquire into various matters and report at next meeting. Seconded by Mr Duff and carried. REPORTS.

From Surgeon Superintendent reporting on Ist February there were in the hospital 18 males, ].] females—--29. Admitted during month 12 males, 29 females—Total treated 70. Discharged cured, 18 males, 23 females, 41; relieved 1 male, 1 female; died 1 male, 1 female. Total discharged 45. Tn hospital 28tli February, 10 males, 15 females— 25. In hospital for two months, 5 males, 3 females—B.—Received. Te Treasurer reported receipts £772 16/8, payments £lOlO/17/8, credit balance £713/18/9. —Received. Accounts amounting to £579/7/1 were passed for payment. The Board then at 9.40 p.m. resolved into committee to discuss the financial position in view of the drawing up of the annual levy at next, meeting. The Board then resumed and reported li aving decided to effect economies on the office of hospital staffs totalling over £SOO. The Board rose at 10.30 p.m.
