HOKITIKA HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24. The Board met at 3 p.m. Present: — Mt issi’s J. A. Murdoch (Chairman), T. W. DuffjJ. King, A. Clifton, W. H. Shannon, and T. W. Bruce (acting lion, secretary). T lie .minutes .were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. IN \\ ADD CORK.'.'iNNDENCE. From S. Evans, forwarding rent due—Received. From S. Yde, in reference to rent of lease of reserve owned by him.—Peceiv. action deferred for the present. From Hokitika School Committee applying for a grant for the purchase of prizes and stationery for the District, High School.—Received, left to Town members with power to act, the application to receive favourable consideration if the power was available for prizes.

From N.Z. Insurance Coy., in reference to rebate on premium.—Deceived and request agreed to. The treasurer reported receipts £Bl 14s sd, payments £2! 10s. Credit balance £57 4s sd.—Deceived.

Accounts amounting to £3l 11s 9d were passed for payment. It was resolved to have the fencing work, authorised at last meeting completed. The Chairman then read lengthy correspondence from Mr James O’Brien, M.P., and the correspondence received by the latter from the Minister of Education, Hon. H. Atmore, in reference to the amending section in the Finance Act, affecting the status of the Hokitika High School Board, including the telegram appearing in that day’s pe r ' n r in regard to the attitude of the Minister. Jn view of the apparent passing of the amending .section it was resolved to defer further consideration in the meantime. The Chairman moved that the thanks of the Board be extended to Mr O’Brien for bis efforts in the matter, and that the Board looks .with .pleasure to meeting the Minister, the "'Hon. Atmore on his proposed visite to Hokitika to discuss with him the contents olf the Amending Act, and the Board trusts that the,Minister will not act under the power now vested in him until after he met the members of the Board, and will be glad if Air O’Brien would convey the terms of this resolution to the Minister. Seconded by Mr Duff and carried. The Board rose at 4 t » m.
