HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24th

The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present : Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), j). J. Evans, E. W. Heqna.ii, T. W. Duff, J. King. Apologies for ae-sence were made for Dr Teichelmami, Messrs Elcock, Turner, Armstrong and Heinz.

The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.

IN WA RD COUPES PON BENCE

From F. A. Ballinger, (Secretary, Hokitika Poultry Association askin„ for the use of the Town Hall on Wednesday, the 19th November next for .tne conference of members of fhJ South Island Poultry Association.— Received and request granted. From F. W. (Jiiesterman, Foreman, application for annual leave to be taken about the 2nd week in November next.—Received and granted. From P. J. Kirwan, Hokitika, appjeation for permission to install an additional petrol pump of the carbon type at premises in Sewell Street.--Received and referred to Town Oh’k to deal with. From Commissioner of Transport, forwarding Draft of Regulations as to Motor Drivers’ Licenses under the .Motor Vehicles Act, 1924, and asking for suggestions and comments, which will 'be appreciated and generally considered.—Received; referred to Messrs Elcock and Duff to report. From County Clerk, Grey mould, intimating that a meeting of local authorities of No. 12 Highway District will be held at Greymouth that day.—Received. The Town Clerk reported having attended the meeting at Greymouth that day and the allocations were made on the same terms as last year. Report received and approved. From Public Works Department, Greymouth, intimating that a receipt for cheque No. 5477 for £1 2s posted on the 22nd November last had rot been received and asking for a duplicate receipt.—Received and attended to

From Public Works Department. Greymouth, forwarding a copy of schedule showing amounts approved for' expenditure on construction work on Main Highways in No. 12 District for the current year.—Received. From Secretary Hol’tika Poultry Society repeating h.is application ior donation towards the coming Poultry Conference.—Received; the sum of £3 3s was voted on the motion of Messrs Evans and Duff. From Hon. Secretary, Hokitika Swimming Baths, asking for supply of water for the baths from Borough supply.—Received; to be supplied at discretion of the‘Borongli{ Turncock. REPORTS. \ The Treasurer reported: Receipts £lsl Is sd. payments £430 Bs, credit balance £63 17s Id.—Received. Accounts amounting to, £348 6s 4d were passed for payment. The obtaining of dog collars was left to the Town n Clerk to attend W' The Mayor moved that the New Zealand Refrigerating Cby., Christchurch, be advised that the Council sees no reason for altering the charge made for slaughtering foes.—Seconded by Mr Heenan and carried. The Inspector’s report on the safety appliances at the Drill Shed was received and approved. MAYOR’S REPORT’. In accordance with the Council’s decision at lnist meeting, CTs. Heinz, Armstrong, Duff, Evans, and myself, made an inspection of the Borough drains on the loth and we beg to report as follows: — 1

The Foreman having inspected and reported that there is no block in the Sewell Street drain, it is evident that means will have to l>e provided to permit the water in Cameron’s paddock to clear as quickly as possible after heavy rain, and we recommend that the north Town Belt drain he cleaned out and an exit cut through the sand and box levels he taken to enspro sufficient fall to the beach; the drain to be timbered where necessary; and to renew the box drain across 'the north Belt Road. In this connection, we would suggest that the Sußellin'Tondent. of the Merita 1 Hopi tail he asked to give assistance to the Council in respect of the overflow of water from the Alental Hospital grounds to' the beach, and further, that the Borough Foreman furnish an •■estimate of the cost of connecting the existing drain in Tancred Street to Hameron’s naddock.

In regard to the open drain in Mandl’s section, next to Air Brooks in Fitzherbert Street, we recommend that this he piped sufficiently to tio away with the existing nuisance, and also that the grating and box at the connecting 'points at Fit/.herhert Street be renewed. In regard to Air Caliari’s complaint re flooding of his section, we recommend that the Livingstone Street drain be cleaned out and be re-tim-bYred under (Hibson Quay to the outlet, a distance of approximately 25ft., • the growth which is removed from the drain to Ibe burnt. The culvert under the road at Davie Street should he cleared of debris. T,V- RoVeston Street drain at. Air Appleton’s residence abo requires to be cleaned out.—Received and adopted. The Town Clerk reported that the cost of naming the streets in enamel plate would he £2O Os. Mr Evans stated that the Beautifying Society would provide £2O towards the cost. The offer was accepted with thanks. Tt was l-solved to hold the meetings on the second Friday in each month. The Council rose at 8 p.m.
