WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL.

TUESDAY, AUGUST 12,-1930. The Council met at 2 p.m. Present Messrs W Searle (County Chairman), H. Wells, B. Ward, J. Donovan, W. Jeffries, M .Houston, T. It. Chesterman, apologies for absence neie made for Messrs Murdoch and Keenan. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From Treasury, notifying amounts of accrued revenue to credit of County Fund Account.— Received. From family of late Sir Joseph Ward thanking Council- for floral tribute, and also expressions of sympathy in recent bereavement. —Received. From Mr and Mrs R. Ross, thanking Council for expression of sympathy in bereavement.— Received. From Highways Council, forwarding tracing showing small area of land proposed to be vested in Railway Department, asking for resolution of Conuctt consenting - to same.—-Receiv-ed' and., .fequest granted- and formal resolution-' passed. v-P-i;. ; . , From Agricultural Dept., advising that subsidy on Kea beaks is to cease forthwith.—Received. From same, forwarding (renewed slaughter house license for G. d. Thomson, Manainui, and others.— Received, From New Zealand Railways, advising that there are no proposals proposals;,; for curtailment of train seiv rices on -West Coast.—Received. From County Clerk,; Taumaranui, advising by telegram that Ministers were being asked to increase the duty on imported timber in the interests of industry, and asking Council’s support in the matter.—Received. Mr Houston moved that the Government be urged to place an increased duty on imported timber. Seconded by Mr Ward, supported by Mr Donovan and carried. From J. H. A. Diedrichs, Hanhari, applying for renewal of slaughter house, license.—Received; recommended; 1 ... resolution passed at recent meeting regarding striking of annual Harbour ra te'.—Received. From A. E. J nil, Waipawa, thanking Council for letter of congratulations on re-appointment as president of NeW- Zealand Counties’ Association. — Received.' From Turiwhate Sawmill' Coy., Greymouth, with regard to timber on road reserve on Christchurch Road, advising first opportunity same will be discussed with mill manager, and desiring arrangement with Council to continue; r Received. From Hokitika School Committee, asking for assistance towards upkeep and maintenaee of Dental Clinio, as services of dental offioer now extended to county schools.—Received, Air Ward moved that a vote of £5 be passed. Seconded by the Chairman and carried. From Overseer Millner, reporting on progress of work on Secondary Highways for month of July,—Received. From same, advising installation of petrol pump at Knnieri has been completed sat isf actor i lyR ecei v ed. From District Highways Council replying that the fish bolt nuts on the outside of the Arahura railway bridge would be turned inside as desired.— Received.

From aame stating the matter ol gravelling the corner at Greyhound Hotel, Arahura, was being attended to. —Received. It was stated a good job had been completed. From Health Officer, reporting eleven inspections for July and no infectious diseases were reported.—Received. From agents A. M. P. Society stating if number, salaries and ages of employees were submitted, a scheme of staff,(superannuation would be drafted, and submitted to the Council for its consideration. —Received; information to be supplied. From A. Wall, Hari Hari, offering to supply timber and make a contribution towards the cost of Alfred road bridge, lately destroyed by flood.—Received. The Chairman moved that the offer be accepted. Seconded by Mr Jeffries and carried, subject to government grant being made available. From Roadman Dale, reporting illness and asking for leave of absence. Received and request granted. From Overseer Millner, reporting Roadman Dale would be off duty for a week.—Granted. From Same, reporting repairs necessary to Waitaha Settlement and Petersen roads; also stating cost of re-erect-ing two pile pier bridge on Alfred rond to replace the structure loist by flood, would be £23s.—Received. From Same, reporting on Riding works and operations of road plant for past month.—Received. FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Your Committee has the honor to report that the accounts presented for the month of July, 1930, have been examined with the usual care, and beg to recommend that the amount as approved totalling, £2027 5s Bd, be passed for payment. The Treasurer reported that the granting of rebate on rates expires on the 21st inst. To date £853, or 17 per cent of the General Rate, has been collected, and £126, or 19 per cent of the Harbour rate.—Received. The Chairman’s report was read and received (published yesterday). ORDER PAPER. The Chairman moved:—-“That

the account# for the month of July, 1930, as revised and recommended for payment by the Finance Committee, amounting to £2027 7s Sd. be passed for payment.” Seconded by Mr Ward and carried. The Chairman’s motion:—‘‘That in accordance with the request from the 'Commissioner of 'Crown Lands and the District Engineer, the authority granted by the Council on August 7, 1925, to the Diggers Sawmill Coy., Inangahua Junction, for permission to cut timber from an unused road reserve on Christchurch Road, and confirmed and transferred on May 13, 1930, to the Turiwhate Sawmill Coy., Greymouth, be and hereby is now rescinded” was held over. It was resolved that the Chairman and northern members meantime confer with the engineer and mill owners, with a view to a suitable arrangement being made and to report to the Council at next meeting. The Chairman’s action in granting concrete pipes for a church crossing at Harihari and permission to move the church along the road to a new site was confirmed. Mr Donovan reported the Okarito to Forks road was now in better order tlnm it had been for years. It was resolved that some, ruts be raked in, Mr Donovan to supervise. The Council rose at 3.5 p.m.
