SHILLING PETROL TAX ADVOCATED
HORSF- CARRIAGE CHEAPER. “I only wish it was a .shilling,” declared Mr D. McDougall (Mataura,) in the course of strong advocacy of the increased petrol tax, in the House He urged that if the threepence rise put some carries off the road it would. be of economic advantage, because it was much cheaper to deliver within two miles by horse vehicles. If me lorry drivers were put off they could drive horses, and that would mean more business for the farmers, who would grow the feed, and more work for the farmers’ men, and the country would benefit by cheaper transport within short distances.
Mr J. Linldater (Manawatu): What about 20-mile deliveries ?
Mr. McDougall: You have the railway and if you want to deliver goods 20 miles by lorry you ought to be in charge of a Plunket nurse. (Laughter.) He pictured the improved conditions for farmers if they had to grow more chaff and oats. He would certainly vote for the increase, and he only wished it 'was a shilling. Those who opposed it had to consider whether they were not voting for the big oil companies instead of the farmer and the railwayman.
