HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, .JUNE 13tli

The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs 0. A. Perry (Mayor), E. W. Heenan, T. W. Dull, A. R. Elcock, D. J. Evans, J. King, A. C. Armstrong, and Dr Teichehnann.

Leave of absence was granted to Mr J. L. Turner and Mr G. Heinz’s absence was apologised lor.

The minutes were -confirmed and correspondence outward was approved.

INWA R D CO R R ESPOND E NCIv

From Secretary, British Empire Cancer Campaign Society, Christchurch, intimating that Minister of Health is recommending necessary legislation during coining session to validate grants made by local bodies to the Cancer Campaign Fund, and asking Council for donation towards the Fund.—Received; £5 5s was voted to the- Fund.

From Under-Secretary, Department of Internal. Affairs, .Wellington, intimating'' that payment to. the Council of Auctioneers! fees up .to the 22nd. May, 1930, amounting to- £77, is being arranged through the -Treasury.:— Received.

From Commissioner of Transport, Wellington,, forwarding copy 'of Motor Lorry Regulation Amendment No. 4, N.Z. Gazette No. 42, of the 31st. May, 1930.—Received.

From Sanitary Inspector, Grcymoutli: (1) report of inspection from the 6th. to the 26th. May, 1930; (2) notification of case of diphtheria, and asking that refuse adjoining the premises be removed.—Received.

From Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth: (1) asking for return of wages paid to workmen; (2) intimating that the Railway Department point out that Local Bodies are neglecting the maintenance of St. Andrew’s Cross signs, .which were erected some years ago.— Received; referred to Public Works Department to attend to. From Secretary, Arthur’s Pass National Park Board, Christchurch, intimating that funds are required for development of the Park, that the government had granted £2OO for preliminary expenses, that the Christchurch City Council had promised assistance up to £SOO, provided a similar sum is raised from other Public Bodies, ■ that the Board had apportioned £SOO amongst all Local Bodies in Canterbury, north of the Rangitata, that in all probability the Government would subsidise pound for 'pound, and with £2OOO the Board can'assure the public a ready enjoyment of many of the Park’s various attractions, and asking for a contribution towards the Fund.—Received. Dr Tcichelmann referred to the movement on behalf of the Board of which he was a member, and moved that £lO be voted.— Seconded by Mr Evans.* ’the Mayor said he would'vote against the mot ion, as lie thought it a waste of money. Mr Heenan also said lie was going to vote against the motion, as he considered it was a check to ask Hokitika to contribute. The Government should provide the amount required. The motion was carried.

From F. A. Ballinger, ,Secretary Hokitika Poultry Society, intimating that a large Poultry Show will he held in Hokitika in July, and that the South Island Poultry Association’s Conference also takes place here about November next, and asking for small donation towards Fund.—Received. The Mayor moved that the Council regretted inability to •comply with the request. Seconded by Mr 'Duff arid carried. It was intimated that the question of a grant may he considered after the. conference is hold.

From Ralph Mackley, Hokitika, asking 'for attention to footpath’'on the northern side of Hampden St., between Sewell St. and the Railway line.—Received;' referred to Public Works Committee for attention. From W. H. Steel. lessee of Municipal Reserve No. .>33, Weld St., intimating (1) that lie desires to install a household drainage system on the Reserve and asking which drainage ouLlel he can use, and (21 application for street crossing fronting section.—Received; referred to Public Works Committee for report. From J. A. Cuttance, Hokitika, thanking Council for having a street electric light erected at the corner of Weld and Davie Streets.—Received. From Town Planning Institute forwarding coiiios of address by Minister. —Received. From J. J. Mclntosh drawing attention to state of footpath on Gibson Quay.—Received; referred to Public Works Committee.

From T). J. Evans, Hon See. Horticultural and Poultry Society stating the Society is being wound-up and it was proposed to transled their rights to the Hokitika Poultry Society, and asking permission to do so.—Received and approved.

REPORTS

The Treasurer reported receipts £275 7s 7d ; payments .£321 2s 9d ; debit balance £1023 10s 7s. Received.

Accounts amounting to £196 its 8d were passed for payment. From Manager Abattoirs reporting there were slaughtered during May : 24 cows. 61 bullocks. 17 heifers, 207 sheep, 75 lambs, ]S pigs, 31 calves. Condemned 1 cow, 1 bullock. Fees for month £69 Is (id (same period last year £7B 9s 7d.) —Received.

FOREMAN’S REPORT,

I beg to report the following works were carried out during the month:

Kerhing has occupied most ol the lime during the month. The lootpath on tin' east side of Sowell St. between Weld and Hamilton Streets was kerlicd, the distance being six and a-balf chains. Fitzlicrbcrt St. footpath between Bark and Hampden Sts was kerbed, on the east side, a distance ol ten chains, and on the west side a distance of live chains, tiie total distance being 21.) chains.

Thei loulpa'tli bo,tween Weld and Stafford Sts in Fitzlicrbcrt St was tar-sealed, -and a section of Dark St was chipped and cleared ol growth.

Rolleston St. drain was cleaned on J for a ilistaucu and the growth cleared, and three days was spent by one ol the staff cleaning up at the abattoirs. Water service were put in at ■). Stewart’,* in Davie St., and the service was renewed at All’s While’s in North Kovel] St. A number of leaks wore repaired in various parts of the town: The average depth’ ol water in the Reservoir for the month was ten feet. LAKE WATER SUPPLY

In respect to the pipe line from the lake, T" beg' to state- • the distance reached is 401) chains. •

The point reached from the intake to where the line emerges from the husn on the Lake road is 95 chains, and we have trenched and laid 6) chains • down' - the road,- alongside .the. old pipe line .thus finishing the supply of pipe in hand; ' ' A -,. ' It now remains' fo connect the line near the Lake, and to the end laid to, which we intend to do next week • in the meantime we arc-getting the lino clear to junction on.The water from the Lake will have to ho turned off for a day or two while making the connections at both ends, hut as the penstock water is keeping up well, the supply in the ResJervtoir should keep orv while doing so. —Received.

The Mayor moved that the Council accept the monetary offer ol the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and the Council subsidise .the‘Amount £ for £ —Seconded by Dr Tcichelmann- and carried. The Council rose at 8.10 p.m. .
