When passing through .the Red Sea, the Dominion Line steamer Port Adelaide, which arrived in Auckland from Launceston last week, encountered a great cloud of locusts. Millions of the i;.,sects passed over the steamer in trussing the gulf from the Arabian to idle Egyptian coast. Eadh insect was about three inches long. The swarm wrs encountered in the afternoon, and the insects continued to flit over the steamer for two hours, during which time.she steamed about 26 miles. Many of the locusts fell on the decks of the Port Adelaide, and every door had to he closed. Vet in spite of the precaution taken some of the loe.usts entered the quarters of the officers and crew, and one insect was found in the engineers’ room, where it had eaten : a pot plant. c
