LONDON, June 5
The warmest day of the tour and the wicket faster than yesterday, hut ■the attendance is thin.
At the end .of the second day’s play in the Middlesex match, the Australians arc in a strong position. this was mainly due to a sparkling display by Kippax. who revealed his true form for th c first time on the tour. With Fairfax he added ninety-four for the sixth wicket. Kippax steadily approached the hundred which occupied 210 minutes. His was a chanceless innings. Grimmett hit hard end had a short, happy knock. The former Australian, Allen, bowled admirably with fine speed and stamina, and finished with 6 lor /7. The last four wickets fell for eight.
Walker behind the stumps received a nasty 'blow in the second over and had to leave the field. Richardson took the gloves and suecceeded in stumping Stevens. Three wickets were down for thirty-eight and Hendren should have been run out before scoring. With Middlesex fighting hard to stave off defeat, inns came -slowly. Hornibrook did not seem to receive the same assistance from the pitch as yesterday. Hendren and Allen put the home side in a stronger position. Hendren was then set and scored freely.
