CHANNEL TUNNEL
DECIDED AGAINST BY GOVERNMENT.

The Prime Minister announced in the 'Commons to-day that the Gov-crnnim-t -had decided og.am.-t the Channel Tunnel.
A White Paper on the subject Avon Id be issued. lie Avas asked whether an opportunity Avould be given for tip. House to discuss the matter and whether a free vote would be allowed. He offered to give whatever facilities might be required for a debate.
Mr Austen Chamlj-crlain (for the Conservative Party) pointed out some members of 'the Opposition might find themselves in agreement Avith the Government's decision.
The Prime Minister replied that be was aware a division on the s:iojeet ran through at any rate t-AAo parties in the House, and he would certainly not arrange for the question to be put to the House in the nature of a A'ote of censure on the Government. Asked for reasons for the GoA-ern-ment’s decision, Mr MacDonald said they AAoukl be gi\ r en in the White Paper.
