The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present—. Messrs D. J. Evans (Deputy Mayor in the Chair), T. \V. Duff, A. C. Armstrong, E. W. Heeunn, J. King, A. R. Elcock, and Dr Teichelmann. .

Apologies were made for the absence of the Mayor and Mr Turner. ■'Pile minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.

From Government Statistician, return of buildings -permits, 1929, and also special return of damage by earthquake.—Received. From No. 12> District Highways Council, return of royalties collected by Local Authorities under Section 173, Public Works Act, 1928.—Received.

From District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, Christchurch, asking Council to tar seal Weld Street railway crossing and charge cost to Railway Department.—Received ; referred to Public Works .Committee to deal with.

From the Secretary, Westland Hospital Board, statutory notification that Hospital levy lor 1930-31 was struck at a meeting of the Board held on the 28th April, 1930, and that Council’s proportion of the levy is £B6O 11s, payable in nine payments of £95 12s 4d, commencing on the Ist June next, and ending on the 31st January, 1831.—Received'. - ■ ' From the Secretary, Hokitika lire Board, statutory notification under Section 25 of the Fire Brigades Act, 1926, that Hokitika Borough Council is levied for the sum of £3lO, for the year ending the 3llst March, 1931, payable in four payments of £77 10s each, on the Ist April, July, October, 1930, and the Ist January, 1931. The Finance Committee recommended payment of accounts amounting to £507 17s 9d.—Received and passed for payment.

FOREAI AN’S REPORT

I beg to report the following works were carried , out during the month of April. 'far-sealing was continued on Weld ,3t. to the Railway and on' Sewell St. to Gibson’s Quay from Weld St., the corners of Bealey St. leading off Weld St. and Stafford St. were also tarsealed. Sections of' footpaths in BeaIcy and Fitzherbert Sts were chipped, also Hamilton' St. footpaths, and growth cut on parts of Hampden St. between the racecourse and Livingston St,

The wooden drain across Hampden St. at the corner of Jollie St., which was rotten, was removed, and concrete pipes were put in, and Jollie St drain was cleaned out.

Three new pipes were put in the main on Gibson’s Quay between Sewell and Tailored ,'Sts, and two new pipes between Bealey and Fitzherbert Sts, the water connection was repaired at the Cemetery, and on three different occasions repairs were carried out on the pipe line between the Reservoir and the Kanieri Forks, a number of leaks was attended to in various parts of the town. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was oft llin.

PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE

The Works Committee met on the 2ml. inst. to consider what new works should be included in this year’s estimates, and wq recommend .the following:— (I)—That if possible the road planer he hired from the Public Works Department and the motor lorry from Westland County for the purpose of dragging the Alain Highway and other streets requiring attention.

(2)—That the basis of. maintenance of the Alain Highway he the same as last year, and .that the Town Clerk submit the same proposals for widening the Alain Highway as were made last year.

(3) —Kerbing and channelling Fitzherbert St., between Park St. and Stafford Sts, east and west side, total distance fifty chains at £4 10s a chain -£225.

Kerbitig and clmnnclliing Stafford St. on the Cass Square side Beaiey ,and Brittaii Streets, distance 11 chains', at £4 10s a chain, -cost £49 10s.

(5) —Kerbing and channelling Sewell St. east side, between clock tower and Hampden St-., distance 20 chains at £4 10s Od a chain, cost £9O.

(0) —We recommend that pipe-mak-ing be commenced to Innld up a good stock of pipes,* and that later in the year drainage construction be undertaken as funds permit.

FIRE PREVENTION

EXTENSION OF WATER' SERVICE

MAINS

The following extensions of the watermains should be considered so far as funds will permit:—'

(1) —Extend the Sewell St. Main for a distance of thirteen chains towards the north Town Belt. The cost ot this work using 4iii. galvanised pipes is £303, and using 4in. woodpipes is £231.

(2) —Extend the watermain from the fire plug at the top of Hall St. along Park St. to Brittan Street, and then down Brittan Street to Hampden Street, a distance of chains. The cost of .this work using 4in. galvanised, iron pipes is- £203, and using Jin., wood pipes is £306. If: the full work: cannot be undertaken in each • instance, probably a portion could be accomplished. —Received.

MAYOR’S REPORT.]

In accordance with the. decision of. the Council, the .Town Clerk and myself waited upon the members of the Highways Board; on the 21st., ultimo, to ujrgie. the Council’s application for an extension of the Main Highway from Stafford Street to the . Post Office via Fitssherbert Street, and Weld Street from Fitzherbert to Revell Street.

The Chairman of the Highways Board intimated that it was not the policy of the board to grant such extensions in Boroughs, but lie ilitimalisd that the Board would probably be prepared to .grant an increased | subsidy for tar sealing the existing Mai]i T-Ticrhway.—Rec'ejved.
