VI r Harry Newman left Hokitika yesterday morning at 8.3 J o’clock driving a Hudson Sedan. He arrived at Dunedin last evening at 10 o’clock after n very line run. He went on to Invercargill this morning.

It is notified that Mr John Woolhouse lias taken over the business of .Johnson and Woolhouse, butchers, of Revel! St., which will be carried on under the same management. All accounts owing are requested to he paid and all accounts due by the firm rendered.

On Sunday afternoon a number of loud reports carne from the rear of Mr .John 11 urren’s store, situated in Main Street, Kuniara. Upon investigation it was found that four small boys had located a quantity of gelignite, and forthwith proceeded to endeavour to explode it by placing a number of plugs on a stone and dropping another stone oh top of it. In this manner 25 plugs Were disposed of and, strange to say, the youngsters escaped getting hurt nor was any damage done.

A disastrous fire took place on Sunday morning at about 5 o’clock when a cottage and contents owned by Mr C. Cook situated on the road between the Kumnra Junction and Tnramakau railway bridge were totally destroyed. When the fire was first noticed, Mr and Mrs Cook and son were in the milking shed, situated about 150 yards away. The fire had n big Hold when Mr Cook arrived on tiie scene, and only a few pieces of furniture could be saved.

Mr Harry- Ellery, teacher, of the Woodstock. School, met with a serious accident on Friday evening when travelling on his motor cycle along the road between Kuniara and Dilmanstown. At a point where there is a sharp bend, and two roads join, the motor cycle collided with a motor car approaching Kuniara from Dillmanstown, in which Mr White (Power House Engineer for the Westland Power Coy) was driving a number of people to a .concert at Kuma-ra. The motor cycle was wrecked, and Mr Ellery had his hip seriously fractured, and sustained other injuries to his legs. He was conveyed to the Grev River Hospital, where his condition, despite the effects of severe shock, is reported to be as satisfactory as can be expected, though it will be some weeks before he is able to leave the institution.

The Kumara Borough Council has been advised by the Minister of Public Works that he Avas unable to favour the request made by the Council ifor a further grant of £2OO to assist in the cost of repairs to the Taramakau Bridge, and more particularly in vieAV of the fact that it Avas not the policy of the Government to assist with the cost of Avorks Avithin Boroughs. The Mayor, speaking at a meeting of the Council, said the bridge Avas not in the Borough. The Borough boundary did not extend to the bridge Avhich Avas betAveen the Grey and Westland Counties. He moved that the Toato Clerk reply to the Minister pointing out the financial position of the Borough in respect to this bridge and at the same time, enlighten him as to its location. The death of Mrs Miller, wife of Rev. Alex. Miller, of St.- Andrew’s Church, Westport, took place on Saturday. The deceased went over to Sydney for medical treatment, arriving there only on Tuesday morning. Advices were favourable, leading to the hope of a good recovery. On Friday, however, a message was received that she was seriously ill. Mrs Miller came to Westport six and a half years ago as the bride of Rev. A. Milter, and her bright disposition made her a, general favourite. Much regret will be felt 1 at her early passing, and deep sympathy will be felt for Rev. A. Miller.
