The annual report of the British Commercial Councillor at Berlin, issued by the Department of Overseas Trade, emphasises Germany’s general prosperity. Despite a sloAving doAvn of industry, due to the re-equipment and rationalisation, and also to tlie Reparations, the Savings Bank deposits in Germany have increased by 135 millions sterling. The iron and steel trades have overcome the critical period, thus contrasting Avith the British position. The shipyards and engineering Avorks are better employed. The German motor industry slioavs a phenomenal expansion. The production increased by 25 millions sterling since 1926.
The foreign trade of Germany has expanded by £70,800,000 compared Avith the British increase of £14,000,030.
The report refers to the extraordinary elasticity of German commerce and to the ability of German manufacturers to force up their exports to a remarkable degree.
