STEERS STAMPEDE

- ALARM IN SPREYDON. CHRISTCHURCH, October 3. 1 Much alarm was caused in Spreydon yesterday morning when a number ol stivers stampeded, as. a result of which one man was injured, whilst a woman and babyi narrowly escaped being hurt. The cattle were brought in from the country on Tuesday evening, and were placed in a paddock in Barrington Street before being taken to the Addington saleyards. In the early hours of 1 yesterday morning they escaped from the paddock and roamed round Spreydon for several hours before they were eventually caught by the harassed drovers. Many people had narrow escapes, the steers charging everyone they saw. Some of the cattle entered the Addington School ground, but fortunately tlie children were in school, and the beasts did little harm. Two of the steers became so wild ffiat it became necessary lor them to ho shot. One' woman was knocked from her cycle, while another woman just suceeeded in getting through a gateway when a steer charged. Later in the morning, a woman with a bahv was stopping from a tram at the Spreydon terminus,' when a steer charged her. However, she waved her arms, and the animal became frightened and moved aside. The drovers were out before dawn but it was not until midday that tbo beasts wore eventually caught.
