FEDERAL ELECTIONS
NOMINATIONS CLOSE. (Australian Press Association) SYDNEY, October 1. The nominations for the Federal House of Representatives election closed to-day. There were many eleventh hour surprises. The whole of the six Ministerial deserters, Right Hon AY. M. Hughes, Air Marks, Mr Mann, Mr Maxwell, Mr Stewart and Sir Littleton Groom have strong opponents. In the North Sydney contest, where Mr Hughes and Dr Nott arc seeking for the anti-Labour suffrages, two additioiial candidates have been nominated, namely, Mr Judd (Leader of the Socialist Party) and Mr Banks, who describes himself as an independent Labourite. Neither of these latter .art* expected to poll more than a handful of votes. The Prime Minister, Mr Bruce, has two opponents in the Flinders contest in Victoria. One is Air Holloway, the official Labour candidate, and the other is Air Birch, an.unofficial Lab- ( ourite. The nominations are noteworthy for the number of Independents and of nne|ndorsed National and Labour candidates. The present election, which is causing tremendous interest and personal feeling, has brought forward many more aspirants than had been expected. • .
