HUMOROUS SONG, amateurs—Own selection not in character. Mr J. D. Smith (Dunedin), 88 points 1 Miss Mary Bald (Hokitika), 87 point > 2 There were no other competitors.

Dr Jarman stated Mr Smith chose a good song, and presented quite a lot of keen Humour, which was well put over, and properly in the song, too. Miss Bald also made a good choice, and the song was very nicely sung. He thought, however, that there Was more humour in the song given b3 r Mr Smith.

Howden (Port Chalmers) 81, Miss Margaret Green Dorothy Ramsays (Burkes) 79, Miss Annie Throp (Sawyers’ Bay) 78, Miss L. Boyd (Maori Hill) 78. In his comments Dr Jarman stated that this was n very enjo3 r able section. The songs of Scotland were for the most part very pelasingly sung, and the competition was very closely contested. In this section simplicity of style must be aimed at. The art should be “ that art which conceals art.” Miss Bald made a beautiful choice and gave a very pleasing rendition with simplicriv and artistry. Miss Myers made a good choice of song which was very pleasingly interpreted. Her words, however, might have been clearer. Miss Young controlled the tone nicely and sang with nice expression. She must watch to preserve the purity of tone in crescendi. M:ss Ritchie made a nice selection, and sang with a nice clarit3’ of tone and good expression. Her words were good
