EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

CENTRAL COMMITTEE. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 27. The Central Earthquake Committee met this week. A resolution was passed taking strong exception to the action of some of the refugees, who have abused the opportunity granted them of being reasonably fitted out with necessary clothing, and that the amount already expended, out of the relief funds on behalf of refugees be taken into account in considering the applications for assistance in the restoration of properties. DEPENDENTS OF VICTIMS. It was decided that provision would require to be made for the widows and dependents off the persons who were killed during the earthquake, either by the purchase of annuities, or by setting aside, in trust, sufficient monies to provide a reasonable income, according to the requirements of each case. allowances FOR FARMERS. A recommendation of the Murchison Relief Committee that allowances be paid to those farmers who have been deprived of access to their properties was discussed. It was approved, and a resolution was passed that, pending the restoration of access to all farm properties, an allowance be paid to the settlers concerned at a rate to be determined in accordance with the circumstances of each settler. CORBYVALE. A Sub-Committee was set up to consider access to Corbyvale specially. Grants totalling £2420 14s 9d, to 169 applicants, were approved on the recommendation of the District Committees. As regards other applications received, a Sub-Committee was appointed to consider them, and to report as early as possible. A QUESTIONABLE COMPETITION. It was reported that {i competition upder the name M Prize Pars Number One,” somewhat in the nature of a puzzle competition, had t been ! organised, and that tickets wes being sold, indicating that ten per cent off the net profit is to go to the relief fund. The Committee wished it to be known that it had not given its sanction to any such competition, and that in any entertainment or other form of raising funds, a condition must be/that the whole of the net. proceeds shall be applied to. the fund.
