HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13th. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), A. R. Elcock, T. W. Duff, E. W. Heenan, D. J. Evans, A. C. Armstrong, J. King, J. L. Turner, G. Heinz and Dr Teichelmann.

The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved.

INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. •

From New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., Christchurch, intimating that the following meat was delivered into Hokitika during the' month of July, 1929: 155 sheep, 4 lambs, and 2-} cattle. —Received.

From Department 'of Internal Affairs, Wellington, forwarding amended regulations respecting trading accounts of Borough Councils made under the Municipal Corporations Amendment Act, 1928.—Received. From the Westland Wood Pulp and Paper Syndicate, Ltd., forwarding brochure respecting negotiations with the Government for the establishment of a woodpulp and paper mill on the West Coast.—Received.

From the Secretary, Westland Racing Chib, intimating that following a letter from Council, the Club and Automobile Association bad combined to set up a Committee to arrange the details of the equipment of a camping ground for touring motorists at the racecourse, and asking if the Council would be represented on the conference. —Received. Messrs Turner, and Armstrong were appointed. From Kanieri Electric Ltd., advising that request of Town Clerk for removal of wire stay from the Public Library had been comnlied with.—Received. From the District Public Trustee, Greymoutli, intimating that he accepts a lease of Municipal Reserve No. 498 in the terms of the Town Clerk’s letter of the 9th August, 1929.—Received. From William Livingstone, 36 Wordsworth Street, Sydenham, applying for permission to run an electric merry-go-round, Cass -Square, for about four weeks from the 3rd Januaiy next. The charge to be 6d for each child or adult for approximately between two to three minutes; and further, that the only side-show would be the game of hoopla, and selling dolls on sticks. —Received. Mr Armstrong moved that the request be granted, subject to the charge for children not exceeding threepence. Seconded by Mr Turner. Mr Evans moved that the charge be £1 day without any restriction as to price, but subject to conditions as to location to be fixed by the Reserves Committee. Seconded by Mr Duff. The amendment was carried and,. becoming the substantive motion was.- agreed to. :. From Medical Officer of Health, Christchurch, intimating that Inspector Bettel would be absent on annual leave from the 22nd August to 11th September, 1929, inclusive, and requesting that Council appoint Inspector Martin Hall ns relieving Inspector during that period. —Received and approved. From D. P. Stuart, Stafford Street, applying for a street crossing at the east corner of his setcion, No. 1012, Stafford Street.—Received and request granted on usual conditions. From Stanley Bassett, drawing attention to unsatisfactory condition of the drain in Hall Street at Mr C. Neville’s frontage.—Received. From W. Wilson, agent for A. W. S. Barltrop, application for consent to sub-divide Sections 395 and 397, Rolleston Street, as the owner desires to dispose of Section .395., The sub-divi-sion will leave each section with a frontage to Rolleston Street of 100 links.—Received and approved. From Department of Agriculture, forwarding draft of proposed amendment of Slaughtering and Inspection Bill.—Received; Town Clerk to attend to. From Grey County Council, forwarding heavy traffic fees : —Balance due 31st March, 1929 17s 5d ; Ist April to 30th August, 1929, £9l 14s: total £92 11s sd.—Received.

From Health Officer, notifying case of diphtheria.—Received. From Public Works Department. Wellington, forwarding approval of maintenance subsidy for Highway in Borough for half-year ending 30th September, 1929, for £l6O, being £2 for £1 on maintenance expenditure.— Received.

From Miss Esther Ward, re Municipal Reserve 494.—Received; request granted. From Officer in Charge, Salvation Army, Hokitika, asking that depressions in footpath fronting Salvation Army Hall be filled.—Received ; referred to Public Works Committee. • From Wm. Wilson, asking attention to drain in Davie Street.—Received and referred to Public Works Committee.

From Three Mile Tennis Club, asking for 40 gallons of tar.—Received* request granted. A REPORTS. From Treasurer, reporting receipts .1771 17s sd; payments £750 10s 8d; debit balance £757 18s 4d.—Received. From Manager, Abattoirs, reporting for August there were slaughtered—l 4 cows, 25 heifers, 56 bullocks, 111 sheep, 2 lambs, 12 pigs, 8 calves. Fees for period £4B 10s Od (same period last year £57 14s Gd).— Received. A counts amounting to £243 6s were passed for payment. i " OVERSEER’S REPORT. I beg to report the following works were carried out during the month:—

Drains.—Sewell Street drain has reached to within three chains’ of Hampden Street, progress is better here, as there is less surface to remove, and this work should oe finished during September.

Footpaths.—Sewell. Street footpath, on the north end was gravelled for a distance of eight chains, Water. —Connections were put in at C. Renton’s in Davie Street, J. Gifford’s in ,Hampden Street, Keller’s Hotel in Revell Street, and Masonic Lodge, Revell Street. The spindle was renewed on the valve at the Government Buildings; several leaks were repaired in various parts of the town. Depth of water in the reservoir averViged 9 feet for the month. During the month the Sexton had the misfortune to break his leg, and the position is filled in the meantime by Mr Cray. —Received. *

Mr Heenan referred to damage done at the cemetery recently, when several wreaths had been broken. It was resolved to take stringent action against any offender caught. The Town Clerk reported of rubbish being dumped at the-front of the notice board. It was resolved that the Town Clerk be positively instructed to prosecute any offender, irrespective of person.

Mr Armstrong asked authority to given attention to the footpath between Weld and Stafford Streets in Fitzherbert Street. Authority given. The Council rose at 9 p.m.
