(Received this day at 11.25. a.m.) BAY OF WHALES, August 24. The sun returned yesterday as regular as the sun should, sending its light flashing across the barrier top to spill over the edge and touch the top ice masses on the bay with fire. Far down on the south cliff walls it reflected the brilliant golden light for which we have waited so long. The ice cliffs sparkled like gigantic mirrors, winding back a message of welcome to the sun as if there was some . secret understanding between them and they were amused at. our boisterous happiness.

The winter is far from over and our coldest weather is still to come. The surface of the snow everywhere round the camp is many feet higher than when we stalked on hibernation.

The flag was raised to-day by the Commander’s order and as it whipped out in a twenty-mile wind everyone uncovered, although tforty below, and the wind gripped the ears and noses painfully. Then the British flag was unfurled and the Norwegian and everyone saluted, each with bared head. The ceremony occupied several minutes and when it was over there was a rush for cover.

Jack O’Brien hastily unfurled a green pennant for Ireland and did a snake dance round the doorway but the wind was biting and soon overcame eve the Hibernian’s enthusiasm. We celebrated the big day with a turkey dinner.
