HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

I FRIDAY, JULY ]2tli. The Council met at 7.10 p.m. Present: Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), J. King, A. C. Armstrong, E. W. Heemm, T. W. Duff, J. L. Turner, A. R. Elcock, and Dr Tcichelnuinn. Apologies for absence were made for Messrs Heinz and Evans. The minutes were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. Frym Health Inspector, Grcyniouth, forwarding monthly returns of May and June, 1929.—Received. From , Hokitika School Committee, applying for permission to remove forty loads of brown sand from Whitcombe Square for top dressing purposes at the School grounds.—Received ; the Council regretted inability to allow further sand to be removed.

From H. J. Kearns, Hokitika, relinquishing Reserve No. 575 from Ist July 1929.—Received. From District Engineer, Groymouth, Public Works Department, asking for information as to the life of water pipes under the Council’s control.—Received ; Town Clerk to reply. From Chairman, No. 12 . District Highways Council, asking for additional particulars in regard to items of plant used.

From District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greymouth, intimating that in-regard to Council’s application for subsidy for relief of unemployment that as there were no local registrations from unemployed, and as work is available outside the Borough, the Minister of Public Works considers that there is no occasion to provide subsidy for unemployment relief works in Hokitika Borough.—Received. Froih Director, Town Planning, Wellington, re scale and dimensions of Town Planning Maps.—Received. From Department of Labour, Wellington, .forwarding copy of Amendmentof Apprenticeship Order (Westland Carpenters’ and Joiners’ Award). —Received.

From Under-Secretary, Department pf Internal Affairs, advising that, immeliate payment has been . arranged through the Treasury of fees for the issue of Auctioneers’ License : for the •urrent year.—Received. b ■ From. From Onakaka Iron and Steel Coy., intimating‘that they would quote the price for cast iron pipes at an early date.—Received.

From Secretary, Westland Sub-Union thanking Council 'for .waiving percentage of gateftnoiiey for last Saturday’s benefit for earthquake fund.—Received.

REPORTS. From Treasurer reporting receipts £lB9 13s 9d, payments £497 15s lOd, debit balance - £lO4 14s 5d.-—Received. - Accounts amounting to £175 13s 7d were passed for payment. From Manager of Abattoirs, reporting during June there were slaughtered 27 cows, 19 heifers, 60 bullock. 165 sheep, 29 lambs, 13 pigs, 5 calves. Condemned—l sheep. Fees for period £59 17s (same period last year £67). — Received.

FOREMAN’S REPORT. 1 beg to report the following works were carried out during the month. Drains.—Sewell Street drain occupied a good deal of the month, sixty-eight concrete pipes being laid and connections made—a distance of about two hundred feet.

Footpaths.—Sale Street footpath was cleared between Stafford Street and Gibson Quay, Rolloston Street between Stafford and Weld Streets, and Stafford Street between Sale and Rolleston Street.

Water. —A good many leaks occurred during the month, which were repaired, while a- new pipe was required in Rolleston Street and a new one on the lake road above Butcher’s Gully track and leaks repaired along the line. The chimney at the Town Hall was badly shaken by the recent earthquake and had to be taken down. The road to the new dump at the lower end of the wharf was finished, while fourteen

eighteen inch concrete pipes wore made. The water in the reservoir averaged lour feet for the month. —Received. It was resolved to proceed with Sewell Street drain from the Post Office up to Newmans and then to complete the portion higher up. WATER SUPPLY, IvANIERI LAKE. A distance of ninety chains was surveyed and the levels taken. This when laid will connect on to the present line on a lower grade giving the pipes more fall. A contract was let recently ifor the excavating of the trench. The contractors started on the 4th of this month on the excavating work, while I am engaged in cutting snig tracks, and building a shed to store cement in. As soon as the trench is far enough advanced a start will he made to got the pipes in and the collar’s cemented on one end. The sand required for the jointing can he got from the shore of the lake, supplemented with sand from the sea beach. —Received.

TENDERS. Tenders for the supply of 1,000 loads of sand wore received from P. Coyle Hijd, Mrs B. E. Coyle Is, J. Cameron Is 3d, T. Stopforth Is 3d, C. Coyle Is Od. The tender of P. Coyle was accepted. Mr Turner suggested that a list lx made up of the damage caused by the earthquake in Hokitika. On the suggestion of Mr Hcenan it was resolved to pay casual labor fortnightly and to carry out work on Sewell •Street footpath as soon as the necessary stripping at the gravel pit was carried out. Permission, was given Dr Teiclielmann to open lip a footpath in Hampden Street to put in a drain. The Council- rose at 8.50 p.m.
