HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, MAY 24ili. The Council met at 7.30 p.m. Present; Messrs G. A. Perry (Mayor), E. W. Keenan, T. W. Duff, J. King, A. C. Armstrong, I). J. Evans, G. Heinz. .J. L. Turner and Dr Teichelmann. An apology was made for the absence of Mr Elcock. The minutes were confirmed and out-' ward correspondence approved. IN WARD CORE ESPONDEN CE. , rom Department of Internal Affairs acknowledging notification of election of G. A. Perry, Mayor of Hokitika. — Received. From Department of Labour, Wellington, acknowledging result off poli held to determine the statutory closing day in the borough of Hokitika, and advising that Minister will gazette Wednesday as the statutory closing day.—Received.

From Public Works Department, Greymouth, intimating that departmental searrifier is undergoing extensive repairs, and expressing the opinion that it is doubtful if the machine would accomplish the work required ol it by the borough without detriment to the machine. —Received.

From L. Gooch, Hokitika, application for a twenty-one years lease ol Reserve No. 505, Hall Street, and in timating that he is prepared to put the existing building in good order if lease is granted.—Received and offer accept ed on terms of Council’s letter.

From Clerk off the Westland County Council, drawing attention to unsightly condition of rubbish dump on Hau Hau road, and pointing out that rubbish is encroaching on the road. Received. It was resolved to notify that the dump was closed and forbidding further deposits. From the Clerk, Westland County Council, intimating that the Hon. the Minister of Public Works will not he able to visit Hokitika on the ‘2oth inst —Received.

From.the Chairman, No. 12 District Highways Council, Greymouth, re directing alteration to certain privat* drainage.—Received ; attended to by Town Clerk. From Municipal Association of Ney Zealand, Wellington, forwarding copy of rules cif association, and intimating that subscription had been increased. —Received. From Secretary, Hokitika Harbour Hoard, notifying decision that thp present rubbish dump is required tp be shifted to a site lower down nearer the signal station.—Received. Mr Heenan outlined the attitude of thq Harbour Board who would prefre the dump being removed altogether. Ip any event it was required that the rubbish be placed in the particular site mentioned, otherwise, the rigliwould be withdrawn. After discussion it was resolved that the Council conform to the requirements oif the Harbour Board and that consideration be given to the question of securing a carrier to take the whole work of removing rubbish, the Town Clerk to report at next meeting. From New Zealand Refrigerating Coy., notifying sheep return sent to Hokitika for the past month.—Received

REPORTS

The Treasurer reported receipts £243 8s lOd; payments £270 Is 7d; c]e if balance £l2B 19s lod—Received. Accounts amounting to £431 1 s oi. were passed for payment. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT. 'Flie Public Works Committee beg to report as follows: ’ 1) Subsidy for Relief of Unemployment—Your Committee recommend that the following works be undcrtaen out of revenue; that men lie employed thereon and that application be made to the Government

for subsidy under par. 3, sub-par <b) of letter from Public Works No. 17-28-9921 dated 30th January, 1029, of a total value of £872 10s.

In regard to trallic signs at railway crossings, wc have requested the Town Clerk to ascertain the cost off makin.. and erecting the signs. In regard to No. 3, Main Highway' Estimates for 1929-30, your Committee recommend that any proposals for widening or tar-sealing the main high way be deferred until the next finan cial year, and we recommend the basis of maintenance be increased to a man. horse, and dray for eighteen days a month, and 180 yards of beach gravel per month, provided the extension of the highways-in the borough is approved ; otnerwise that the maintenance be man, horse and dray 14 days a month and 1/50 loads of beach gravel pe month. After discussion in committee it war resolved on the motion of Mr Evans seconded by Mr Turner, to apply for a unemployed grant of £I,OOO, the Publi Works Committee to draw up the necessary schedule. The Town Clerk’s reports on leasing of reserve was received and adopted. The Mayor moved that the Borough horse be sold by auction. Seconded by Mr Heenan and carried. The Town Clerk reported in regard to traffic signs.—Received ; considers tion deferred till next meeting. The Public Works Committee wa authorised to arrange specification and call for tenders for trench cutting on the pipe line. The Council rose at 9.15 p.m.
