DEATH FROM BURNS

GISBORNE, April 2

The death occurred at Cook Hospital this afternoon of Charles Ramie!, aged 41 years, a married man, as the result of severe burns received when a 45 gallon drum of petrol caught fire at his home on Tuesday evening last, deceased’s injuries being sustained while attempting to turn off the tap of the benzine drum.

AfOTOR CYCLIST KILLED

OAAIARU. April 2

As tiio result of an accident oil the Alain South Road, near Hampden, this evening, a youth, Magnus Lning. lost bis life. ITo was riding a bicycle in a southerly direction and was knocked down by a car driven by Moss Wylie, who was proceeding to Dunedin.

BLAZING AfOTOR CAR.

AUCKLAND, April 2

A motor car which was purchased only about a month ago was £540 capsized and was completely destroyed by fir e near Ramarama yesterday. Those in the car were Airs G. Pezaro, Mr and Airs 8. Pezaro, Airs V. Israel and Alaster S. Pezaro. The car skidded in a greasy patch on a bend, and flames burst from the bonnet. The passengers, were momentarily trapped and helpless, but one of the party forced his way from the burning wreck, and pulled out the others. No •baggage could be saved, Air Pezaro losing bis pocket wallet containing papers and money.

BETTTNG CHARGES

AUCKLAND. April 2

In the Police Court, Percy James was charged with laying totalisator odds at Ellers]io racecourse yesterday. Chief Detective Hammond said that James was detected taking bets in front of the Loger enclosure. AVlion found, by Detective O’Sullivan, James had between £(SO and £7O on him. He was merely a silver or sly-bettor. operating in front of the tote and was only in a small way of business. His counsel said .Tames was a respectable married man, who had yielded to the temptation of augmenting bis earnings by doing a little betting during the Easter holidays. James had never been in any trouble before.

ANONYAIOUS DONATION,

AUCKLAND. April 3

An anonymous donation of £2,000 from an Australian lady under the name of Cornstalk, was received by the Secretary of the Melanesian Mission, Major Stuart Robinson. The only condition is the money is to be used for building a new hospital at Alain, in the Solomons.

OLD MAN’S DEATH

AUCKLAND, April .1

William Gordon, aged 74, an inmate of the Army Prison Bate Home ifor several years wandered away on .Monday and was admitted'to the hospital on Tuesday with a fractured skull from which he died this morning.

LEGAL PROFESSION

WELLINGTON, April 3

The second annual conference of the legal profession opened to-day, Mr A. Gray, K.O. (President of the New Zealand Law Society) presiding. The official opening by the Governor-General was deferred until this afternoon, owing to the limited express from Auckland being ah hour and a-half late.

FI on. T. K. Sidey (Attorney-General) gave an inaugural address on legal education.

FOUND DEAD

NEW PLYMOUTH, April 3

Henry Brabant, a postal official at Waitara. aged 34. was found dead in a hack-yard this morning, with a revolver beside him. He had suffered from war service.
