MEDICAL CONFERENCE

200 DOCTORS TO ATTEND. SUBJ ECTS TO BE DEALT WITH. ft is anticipated that 200 delegates will attend the forthcoming annual conference of the British Medical Association (New Zealand branch) in Wellingon. A numhor of important medical subjects are set down for consideration. The first session will lie opened by TJi.s Excellency the Governor-General. In many ways the opening session will be the* most interesting of the conference, because it concerns the subject of cancer. The discussion will he opened by Air Sampson Handley, the eminent surgeon from Middlesex Hospital, and a leading authority on the surgical treatment of cancer. He is coming to New Zealand as the representative of the British Medical Association and of the British Empire Cancer Research Fund. It is hoped that Mr Handley will he able to advise what further part New Zealand can take in cancer research and whether sufficient advantage has been taken of radium as a means of treatment. Dr E.. F. IVAth (of Sydney) the newly appointed Professor of Pathology at Otago University, will deal with /‘Pathological Diagnois in relation to Radium’’ and allied forms of treatment : Dr Douglas Thomas (Melbourne) is to speak on cancer of the stomach, especially in regard to early diagnosis. « On the evening of Tuesday. 19th. February, there will be a Mayoral reception in the Town Hall, followed by the induction of the President. Dr J. S. Elliott, who will deliver the presidential address. This will he followed l.y a reception by the President and Mrs Elliott. On Wednesday the most important discussion will he on herapeutics. “Physiological Principles in Treatment” will he the subject of Professor •T. Malcolm's address. Then folio"' papers by Professors Carmalt .Tones and Herons on “Bacterial Vaccines” and “Antitoxic Sera” respectively, by Dr E. W. Gieson on “Proprietary Preparations.” and hv Drs E. H. Baxter and Ivan S. Wils-m on “The Use of Endocrine. Preparations.” In the afternoon there will he a reception at Parliament Buildings hv the Department of Health. At 8.90 there will he a reception at Government House to the delegates and their wives. On Thursday various aspects of the subject of “Brain Tumo"r” will be enisiderod in pawn's by Dr Marshall Macdonald (Dunedin), Professor F. Gordon Bell (Dunedin), Dr F. J. Gwvnee (Auckland) and Dr A. .T. Hall (Dunedin). On Friday the subject of cancer again comes up for discussion hv throe miners on “Cancer of the Large Bowl.”

The opening speaker will be -Mr Alan Newton (Melbourne), followed by Mr Sampson Handley and Dr D. I'Myers. Under the special section of “Eve, Ear, Nose and Throat,” there will be papers by Dr MacGibben (Christchurch) Dr J. Hardin Neil (Auckland), and Dr W. J. Hope-Robertson (Wellington). In this section an interesting paper will be read by Sir James Barrett, of Melbourne, on “Visual Standards in Railwayman and .Mariners.” During the conference there will also be discussions on various aspects of radiology and nephritis. Discussions which have a special interest for the recently formed Obstetrical Society will take place on the subjects of “Still Births” and “Elampsia.” During the conference the inaugural meeting of the New Zealand MedicoPsychological Association will be held and there will be two papers on subjects of particular interest to alienists. 'The professional meetings will take place at Victoria College, the council having kindly placed the building at the diposal of the conference.
