THOUGHTS FOR THE TIMES.

Lahouk Notions. In the new Parliament Labour will play an important part. It will either no the Official Opposition to a new Government in which the followers of Mr Coates and Sir Joseph Ward have fused, or alternatively it will hold the balance of power between the two. If it is to he the Official Opposition, it will not be very long before it is on flie Treasury Benches. Ilf it is to bold the balance of power, its influence on legislation will be very considerable. In the latter case, we should be able to insist on a more active handling of the unemployment problem, and a greater sympathy for our unfortunate follow workers out of employment. We should lie able to secure those improvements in the pensions laws and family allowances that Labour has been pressing for so long. Possibly an unemployment insurance scheme might also result from a situation in which Labour held the balance of power. I). G. Sullivan, M.P. .
